Diplomatic Fallout After Anti-Israel UN Resolution
A defiant Secretary of State John Kerry on Wednesday defended the U.S. decision allowing the United Nations to condemn Israeli settlements last week, saying the administration did so in the interest of preserving a “just and lasting peace” which he claimed is now threatened – even as Israeli officials describe the move as a betrayal.
During a farewell speech at the State Department, Kerry explained the decision in his most extensive terms yet. He said the U.S. could not “in good conscience” stand in the way of a resolution he said makes clear “both sides must act now to preserve the possibility of peace.”
“We did not take this decision lightly,” Kerry said.
The U.S. abstention on the U.N. Security Council resolution calling Israeli settlements in the West Bank and east Jerusalem a violation of international law allowed the measure to pass – and sent the already-turbulent relationship between the Obama and Netanyahu governments into its rockiest stretch yet.
Kerry said Wednesday the decision was about preserving a two-state solution, which he called the only way to a “just and lasting peace.”
But he said: “That future is now in jeopardy.”
Kerry: US acted according to our values - Secretary of State John Kerry says that Israel won't have "true peace with the Arab world" if it pursues the one-state path.
Israel braces for more tension with US ahead of Kerry speech - Israeli ambassador to the U.N. Danny Danon speaks out on 'shameful' resolution on 'America's Newsroom'

Mendel Roth - Mincha - Music Video
“Mincha” is based on the idea expressed by the Besht regarding the Yid who stands in the marketplace, busy with his livelihood, who has seemingly forgotten his Creator. But when shkiya approaches he sighs, “Oy, what will be with mincha?” and runs to daven, even alone, and even without fully concentrating. The Besht explains that that sigh that emanated from deep within his heart rises straight to heaven.
Reb Mendel, is a tenth generation descendant of the Baal Shem Tov, founder of Chassidus. He believes that Chassidus has declined and stagnated in the past generation, and the movement needs to be rejuvenated and revived with new content and spirit. “The time has come to return to the true sources.” Ideas like independent spiritual searching, self actualization and using your talents fully, going back to nature, seeing kedusha in the beauty of creation, in art, music and even in technology and media – while using them wisely and correctly – reflect, in his opinion, the true continuation of Chassidus that revealed the Aibishter’s light in the world in all of the reality and creations.
He composed the song “Mincha” while in Boro Park. “I walked into a grocery store and heard the storekeeper ask his friend in Yiddish, ‘Until what time can I still daven mincha...?’ I went out into the street and sang the new song to myself.” When he met his friend, Eli Shprei, a member of the Shira choir and responsible for the song’s vocal arrangements, they decided to record the tune, arranged and produced by Chesky Breuer and Mendy Hershkowitz, together with the Shira choir.
On the way, Reb Mendel sang the song to the famous singer Shloime Gertner who connected with it on the spot and even named his new album Mincha after it. Shalom Eisenbachwho served as consultant and guide for the famous Shtisel series, is responsible for the clip production.

Officer Pulls Over Speeding Student Ties His Tie
A Wisconsin college student got an unexpected lesson when a police officer pulled him over as he rushed to find a friend to help him tie his necktie before he had to give an important class presentation.
Officer Martin Folczyk with the Menomonie Police Department in the northwestern part of the state pulled over University of Wisconsin-Stout student Trevor Keeney for speeding on November 30.
The officer quickly switched modes as he worked to secure a decent knot in Keeney's tie while at the same time making sure his license and insurance papers checked out.
Officer Folczyk let Keeney off with a warning -- and a properly knotted necktie.
Keeney told ABC News that he went on to get 92 percent on his presentation for an outside sales class. As an added bonus, the Menomonie police chief invited Keeney to the station for a lesson in the art of tying a necktie. "I went back and met with him for about 30 minutes and he taught me! It was cool," Keeney told ABC News.

King Of Bahrain Hosts Menorah Lighting Ceremony
The small Muslim monarchy of Bahrain hosted a ceremony to celebrate the first night of Chanukkah, and the resulting video of kaffiyeh-wearing sheikhs dancing with Orthodox Jews to Hasidic music has been going viral
On Saturday night, the kingdom, ruled by King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, held a candle-lighting ceremony in which Jews, business people and other Bahraini people took part.
Bahrain, a group of islands in Persian gulf with a population of 1.4 million, is the only Arab gulf state that has a synagogue. The country had a Jewish population of some 1,500 Jews in 1948. However, after the declaration of the State of Israel many left, and almost all those who remained followed suit after 1967’s Six Day War. Today there are less than 50 Jews in the country.
The kingdom is also unique in that its ambassador to the US from 2008-2010 was Houda Nonoo, a Jewish woman who had formerly served in the nation’s parliament.
Hamas slammed the Muslim monarchy of Bahrain for hosting a Hanukkah lighting ceremony which resulted in what it called a “humiliating and disgraceful” viral video of keffiyeh-wearing sheikhs dancing with Orthodox Jews to Hasidic music.

Drunk and Furious at Russian Airport
A Drunk man has driven a car through the doors of a Russian airport terminal and driven around the premises as officers desperately attempted to stop him.
CCTV footage shows a grey car ploughing through snow and into the doors of the Kazan International Airport terminal, taking several attempts to crash its way through, while policemen try to open the car doors.
Separate CCTV footage from inside the airport then shows the driver, who was reportedly intoxicated at the time, proceed to drive through the building as police continue to chase it and shocked members of the public dodge its path.
Finally the vehicle smashes through another door to exit the airport terminal, at which point it stops and officers are able to open the driver door.
The driver was sentenced to 15 days in jail and two more criminal cases were opened against him for allegedly endangering the lives of officers and intentionally destroying property,

US Does Not Veto Shameful UN Restitution Against Israel
The United States on Friday allowed a UN Security Council resolution condemning Israeli settlement construction to be adopted, defying extraordinary pressure from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government in alliance with President-elect Donald Trump.
The Security Council approved the resolution with 14 votes, with the US abstaining. There was applause in the chamber following the vote, which represented perhaps the final bitter chapter in the years of antagonism between President Barack Obama's administration and Netanyahu's government. In an intense flurry of diplomacy that unfolded in the two days before the vote, a senior Israeli official had accused the United States of abandoning the Jewish state with its refusal to block the resolution with a veto.
Trump had also inserted himself in the diplomatic drama, in defiance of the convention that the United States has only one president at a time, by calling on the Obama administration to wield its Security Council veto.
Israel's UN ambassador, Danny Danon, reacted angrily to the vote and issued a sharp parting shot at the Obama administration's role. "It was to be expected that Israel's greatest ally would act in accordance with the values that we share and that they would have vetoed this disgraceful resolution. I have no doubt that the new US administration and the incoming UN Secretary General will usher in a new era in terms of the UN's relationship with Israel," he said.
In a statement, Netanyahu's office accused the Obama administration of "colluding" with the UN and said it looked forward to working with Trump, as well as Israel-friendly members of Congress, "to negate the harmful effects of this absurd resolution."
The US ambassador to the UN, Samantha Power, raised her hand to abstain in the chamber when the resolution was put to a vote.

First Hasidic Woman Sworn in As Civil Court Judge
Rachel Freier may stand just 5 feet tall, but her accomplishments stack up to unprecedented heights. Freier is the first Hasidic Jewish woman to become a judge in the history of New York State.
Freier is accustomed to breaking expectations. Born and raised in Brooklyn, she became a lawyer and launched a charity for an all-female Hasidic EMT service. She even became a paramedic herself so she could volunteer in the field.
For much of her life, Freier was living in two worlds. In one, she was a Hasidic woman respecting the traditions of her religion. In another, she was a professional hoping to work hard and become a lawyer. She found success in bringing the two worlds together.
Freier said that while some members of the Hasidic community criticize her for becoming a judge, many Hasidic men, including her husband, welcomed bringing more diversity to government as well as being a non-traditional role model to the community.
It was a historic moment as Ruchie Freier, a Chasidic female lawyer and the founder of the all female Ezras Nashim volunteer ambulance corps, was inducted as a civil court judge at Brooklyn Borough Hall.
