Murdered Hostages Kindling Menorah in Hamas Tunnels

New footage shows six slain hostages marking Chanukkah 5784/2023 in Gaza tunnel, singing through tears. Israel said Hersh Goldberg-Polin, Ori Danino, Eden Yerushalmi, Almog Sarusi, Alexander Lobanov, and Carmel Gat were killed last August by Hamas, shortly before Israeli troops arrived. The Israeli Health Ministry said that autopsies had determined the hostages were shot at close range. Hashem Yinkom Es Damom!!

Healing of our Community’s Trauma

You gave me the strength that I never knew I had.

Depression, anxiety, and addiction are often direct responses to complex childhood traumas. They hinder the ability to live a truly peaceful and resilient lifestyle and frequently get in the way of relationships and functionality in society.

Paving the path for recovery, Fresh Start is the first step that hundreds of men and women in our community need. In the 7-day retreat, a clinical team of doctors, trauma experts, and world-renowned professionals carefully guide each person through their individual journey to recovery.

Fresh Start is unique because although it includes numerous external factors, the participants are encouraged to find healing within themselves, to re-parent and re-discover their hurt inner child. With separate retreats for men and women, the program aims to cut between 1-3 years of therapy. When done right, 7 days can feel like an entire lifetime.

Members describe the week-long program as eye-opening and life-transforming. In the words of a retreat participant from 2023, There are no words to describe this experience. I am overcome with emotion at how I’m leaving here a different person than when I came.

Fresh Start isn’t just a retreat, it’s a family. The care and assistance extends to more than just the 7 days of their flagship retreat program. Staff relationships remain as a supportive anchor, offering post-retreat webinars, referrals for alumni, and general trauma education.

In 2024, Fresh Start intends to launch Rabbinical training and seminars for school teachers about the topic. In addition, they will host educational workshops that cover areas of concern in the world of trauma and addiction.

This week, give trauma survivors a chance to heal. In a unifying fundraiser, we will use the power of community to display our compassion and care for one another and our aspiration and hope for recovery.

Just a few years ago, the world was hit with unimaginable fear, darkness, and pain. Covid-19 hit us deeply. It was during the initial stages of the pandemic that Legendary composer Anshie Friedman composed this moving song. The message is strong and soothing. It's hard to see pain and be unable to help. But the most powerful tool is your heart. When you see someone hurting give him a shoulder to cry on.

Zaka Volunteers Sing at Kotel

In a moment both heartbreaking and heartwarming, Zaka volunteers gathered at the Kosel on Thursday night to daven and pay tribute to the victims of the Hamas terror attacks against Israel.

Standing in a semi-circle in the shadow of Klal Yisroel’s greatest tragedy, the Churban Bais Hamikdash, they lit candles formed into the number 1,350 – the amount of innocents murdered by Hamas – and sang “Acheinu,” praying to the Hakadosh Baruch Hu to shield them and all of Klal Yisroel in the face of the ongoing unprecedented threats to their lives.

Additionally, the Zaka volunteers and others at the gathering recited Tehillim for the Refuah of the thousands who have been injured in the Hamas attacks, and were led by Kosel Rav Rabbi Shmuel Rabinowitz in saying a Tefillah for the safety of the IDF.

The Little Heart That Healed

When the Doctors said there was no hope, The Rebbe said otherwise and gave his blessing for an easy pregnancy and a healthy baby. 

A personal story about a difficult and tragic medical diagnosis and the response of the Lubavitcher Rebbe, which led to a miraculous result.

The Lesson We Learn from Miriam Bas Bilga

The Lubavticher Rebbe: "The Gemara relates that Miriam bas Bilga abandoned Judaism, married a gentile Greek officer and accompanied the Greeks as they stormed the Holy Beis Hamikdash. She then went and pounded the Holy Mizbe'ach with her sandal, crying out: “Wolf, wolf! You consume the Jewish People’s wealth, but you don't answer them in their time of need!” For this latter deed, the Sages punished her entire family. 

Of what significance was pounding the Altar, compared to her apostasy and intermarriage? Herein lies a profound message: It may appear that a Jew is cut off from everything Jewish... But Torah says: No! What you see is only superficial. The fact remains — he is a Jew. And so his every action, concerns G-d A-lmighty Himself. Even in the lowest spiritual abyss — even during the act of the sin itself — the soul is bound to G-d. 

Even after Miriam bas Bilga apostatized, intermarried, and joined the enemy, what was it that bothered her — “Why is the Altar not protecting the Jews?” After all was said and done, she cried out in pain for her fellow Jews. So why does the Gemara tell us this story? Not, G-d forbid, to disparage a Jewess, but to the contrary — to teach us the beauty of a Jew."

When the Scharf Brothers Didn't Receive Cake

An incredible story for 27 Adar 5752, the day the Lubavitcher Rebbe ZY"A suffered a stroke while davening at his father in law, the Rebbe Rayatz's Ohel.

After their father’s passing in 5750 (1989), the Rebbe ‘adopted’ the four siblings of the Scharf family, showering the young orphans with attention and affection. Before each weekly Farbrengen, the Rebbe would give a piece of his cake to the Scharf boys. Shabbos Parshas Vayakheil, 25 Adar-Aleph, 5752, the Rebbe suddenly stopped this custom. At the time, the boys were heartbroken, but they were left with a strong, powerful and encouraging message.

Maya Namdar began her career in the fashion world as a merchandiser for trendy boutiques in Soho. She graduated from the Fashion Institute of Technology, majoring in fashion buying and merchandising. Maya is the mother of Liel A"H, her 15-year-old daughter who passed away in a car accident in December 2021. Liel was an extraordinary girl who had a lofty Neshama. She had a contagious smile that lit up the world. She lived, loved, laughed & learned" for herself and everyone around her. Liel loved to help people and make them smile, especially those in the outer circle. She didn't do it because she felt she had to- she did it because she wanted too; it was her essence.
