Manually Triggering Avalanches in the Alps
Helicopter crew drop explosives on mountain pistes to trigger an avalanche in after heavy snowfall in incredible footage.
Rescuers filmed the breath-taking footage as they flew above the slopes of Grimentz, in the Swiss Alps, on January 15.
Explosives can be seen falling on the mountain ridges which causes the snow to cascade down in a domino effect.
Helicopter teams were deployed to trigger controlled avalanches to release snow buildup after more than 39 inches fell in some parts of the region in 24 hours.
A local aviation and rescue company, Air-Glaciers, worked with the local ski station to secure the pistes ahead of their opening for skiers.
This comes after heavy snowfall trapped tourists in hotels in the Alps, with all roads blocked and the only way of leaving or entering was by helicopter.
Rescue teams worked 'as a matter of urgency' to try to open roads to free guests as Switzerland's avalanche institute, SLF, lowered the avalanche risk from the highest level, five, to four.
Frank Techel, an avalanche forecaster at Swiss avalanche research institute SLF, said that roughly 10-13 feet of snow had been dumped on the Zermatt area so far this year, which he called an 'extraordinary' amount for the region in such a short span.

IDF Demolishes Home of Terrorist who Killed Ari Fuld
Israeli security forces leveled the home of Khalil Jabareen in the village in his hometown of Yatta, near Hevron.
During the demolition, a number of violent riots broke out. Dozens of Arabs threw rocks at IDF soldiers, who responded with crowd dispersal means.
Jabareen is responsible for killing Fuld after knifing him in the back at a Gush Etzion mall back in September.
Ari Fuld, a 40-year-old father of four, charged Jabareen after being stabbed and managed to squeeze off a few shots before collapsing. He was evacuated to the Shaare Zedek Hospital in Jerusalem, where died a few hours later from the wounds he suffered in the stabbing.
Jabareen was shot by a civilian passerby and taken to Shaare Zedek Hospital as well.
Last week, the Supreme Court rejected the petition of the family of the terrorist against the demolition order issued for the third floor of the house where the terrorist lived.

Suspect Thinks He's Gotten Away, Gets Surprised by Police
DALLAS — A low-speed chase from Garland to Dallas ended in a 7-Eleven parking lot Tuesday after the suspect – who had a machete strapped to his side and claimed he was God – went inside the store, and officers waited for him to walk out, police said.
Stoffon Lorains Cooper, 47, was taken into custody and no one was injured.
The chase started about 3 p.m. in the area of South Garland Road and Avenue B, where a police officer pulled over a minivan for speeding in a school zone.
Cooper, the driver, stopped in the middle of the street, got out of the van and started yelling at the officer, according to a police news release. Cooper then went back to the van and drove to a parking lot.
When the officer began talking to him, Cooper claimed he was "God," according to the news release. The officer, who was concerned for Cooper's mental health, tried to arrest him on traffic warrants, but Cooper drove away, leading officers on a low-speed chase, police said.
Officers eventually ended the pursuit, but a Texas Department of Public Safety helicopter kept following Cooper to a 7-Eleven at Abrams Road and Northwest Highway in northeast Dallas, where he went inside the store.
When he walked out of the store, officers rushed toward him and took him into custody. Police found a "large machete style knife" strapped to his side, the news release said.
Cooper was taken to the Garland jail on charges of evading arrest and the traffic warrants.

1,000 Chinese Changing Railway Tracks in Six Hours
A team of workers have upgraded the railway tracks of a major train station in Chinain just six hours thanks to their eye-opening efficiency.
More than 1,000 workers removed the old tracks and laid new ones overnight at Xi'an Train Station, and no trains were cancelled for the huge renovation mission.
In order to minimise the impact of the railway upgrade on passengers, workers started out on the task at midnight and finished the work at around 6am.
The first train pulled out of the station on schedule at 6.21am on the new railroad.
The revamp took place during the early hours on Tuesday, reported state broadcaster China Central Television Station, which also released a time-lapse video of the project.
In addition to the impressive manpower, directors of the project enlisted around 20 diggers, 500 handheld tools and a tamping machine - used to pack the track ballast - to help with the construction, according to Xinhua News Agency.
Workers also adjusted the traffic signals and a series of traffic monitoring equipment.
Xi'an Train Station is one of the busiest transport hubs in north-western China and handles an average of 60,000 passengers daily.
Chinese railway workers are known for their speedy work. Last January, a new train station in south-eastern China's Fujian Province shot to fame after 1,500 Chinese workers built its railway in nine hours.

Baby's Reaction Hearing New Sounds
The sweet moment a Georgia baby heard clearly for the very first time was caught and shared on Facebook by the 11-month-old girl’s ecstatic family. Scarlet Benjamin, who was born three months premature and contracted a serious bacterial infection while in the NICU, was fitted with hearing aids and finally tested them on Thursday.
“We have spent the last 8 months going back and forth to Athens, Milledgeville, and Augusta to try to figure out where she was on the spectrum,” Carol Benjamin, Scarlet's mother, told Fox 5 Atlanta. “No one could get a good read on her scans.”
According to Benjamin, her daughter had contracted necrotizing enterocolitis after birth, and the medication that she needed to treat the intestinal infection caused hearing loss.
In the video posted to Facebook, baby Scarlet can be seen and heard erupting in laughter at the sound of her mother and big sister’s voices after being fitted with her hearing aids.
“It’s been a long and emotional experience,” Benjamin wrote, in part, on Facebook. “She reacted to most sounds so we thought she could hear fairly well. After what I witness today, it was not as well as I thought. Hearing aids make a WORLD of difference!”

Ezkera - Yisroel Adler - Dirshu Siyum Vienna 2018
Ezkera - Sung and Recorded by Yisroel Adler, Composed by Pinky Weber
It took almost nine decades for the sweet sounds of Torah to be heard again in the Sofiensaal Auditorium in Vienna, yet during last years first week of Nisan, klal Yisrael witnessed a profound manifestation of Netzach Yisrael lo yishaker.
A siyum on the Daf Hayomi Seder Nezikin was held on 2 Nisan in the exact same hall in Vienna where the historic first Daf HaYomi siyum was held. The hall that saw the Nazi takeover of Austria and hosted Nazi rallies and events now has again merited to host not only this siyum, but an enthusiastic undertaking by the Vienna community to undertake daily learning in Dirshu’s Daf HaYomi B’Halacha program.

Yud Shevat with the Lubavitcher Rebbe
Below are two clips of the Lubavitcher Rebbe on the tenth of Shevat, the Yahrtzeit of his father in law the previous Lubavitcher Rebbe who passed in 1950, and the day he accepted upon himself the leadership as Rebbe one year later.
The first clip is from a television news report in 1980, the other, raw footage of the Rebbe in 1992 at the Previous Rebbe's Ohel in Queens, NY, just a few weeks before the Rebbe suffered a stroke.
The Clip that Started it all - Shortly after this clip aired on Yud Shevat 5740 (1980), Rabbi Yehuda Krinsky, assisted by his son Rabbi Hillel Dovid, screened this clip for the Rebbe. After hearing that the younger Rabbi Krinsky assisted the crew, the Rebbe instructed him to continue in this direction. Shortly thereafter, the young man had the idea to bring the Rebbe to wider audiences by televising full farbrengens via satellite, and JEM was born.
Highlights from 770 - the Lubavitcher Rebbe visits the Ohel on Yud Shevat, 5752/1992 -During the winter of 1992, a JEM film crew received special permission to photograph the Rebbe for a documentary ultimately released by JEM in cooperation with the Aleph Institute. One of the scenes filmed was the Rebbe's visit to the Ohel on his predecessor's Yahrzeit in 1992.

Toddler Strapped Into a Car Seat Flies Out of the Vehicle
Horrifying dashcam video has captured the moment a toddler who was still strapped into her car seat flew out of a moving car after her mother failed to properly fasten the seat.
The two-year-old girl toppled out of the rear left door of the car as her mother veered around a corner in Mankato, Minnesota on Monday.
The shocking incident was captured on Chad Cheddar Mock's dashcam as he was driving behind the mother's car at about 11.45am.
It showed the girl, who dressed in a pink jacket and gray tights, falling from car as it slowly veered around a bend in the road. The seat miraculously landed on its side and the girl did not appear to hit the ground. The car braked momentarily at the traffic lights a few feet away despite having a green signal. When the door of the car was shut, the car drove off and left the little girl in the middle of the road.
Mock was captured on his dashcam jumping out of his own vehicle and trying to wave down the mother. He stopped traffic so he could safely carry the child off the road in her car seat.
First responders examined the little girl and found that she had not been injured in the ordeal. Police said the toddler was properly buckled in her child seat but the seat had not been fastened correctly inside the car. It is not clear how the car door managed to fly open.
The girl's mother eventually returned to the scene when she realized her daughter and her car seat were missing.
Police have asked the Blue Earth County Attorney's Office to consider charging the mother with child endangerment and not fastening a child restraint system.

Rabbi Makes Second Organ Donation To Stranger
A New Jersey Rabbi is taking the spirit of giving to a whole other level.
Rabbi Ephriam Simon worked a full day and spent time with two of his nine children, but just a short time ago he literally gave of himself in a whole new way, reports CBS2’s Tara Jakeway.
“I just got back from Cleveland from donating my liver to a man I didn’t know,” said Ephriam.
This organ donation is not the first time the 50-year-old made such a sacrifice for another. Nine years ago he donated a kidney to a stranger.
“To bring them health and to bring them life, and to bring a husband back to his wife and a father back to his children, to me was such a powerful experience,” said Ephriam.
That husband, father and lucky recipient of one-third of Simon’s liver is Adam Levitz.
The Syosset native and father of three children was gravely ill and in nearby Long Island, but many New York State Hospitals don’t allow for living donors to donate multiple organs.
The get around that restriction, the duo flew to the Cleveland Clinic where the operation was a success. The flights for both men and their wives were paid for by the National Living Donor Assistance Center.
Just 20 days later, CBS2 was there to capture the moment the two reunited.
Through this emotional moment for the two new buddies and their families now bonded forever.
“I can see my twins graduate high school this year, my twins, and see my little guy go on to seventh grade,” said Levitz.
“If God forbid, if one of my kids were in need, I would hope that someone would step up like my husband did,” said Nechamy Simon, Ephriam’s wife.
“Now I have the awareness of organ donation and the option of just giving someone’s life back,” said daughter Sarah Simon.
For the Simon family, they wanted people to know you can be an organ donor and live a long healthy life, even if you do it twice.

A מעין of מכת ארבה?
Based on the timestamps of images on twitter, it appears this sort of "plague of locust" occurred on Monday, January 7, directly on the day the Torah portion of the Makas Arbeh is read!
Authorities at the mosque in Islam have launched a campaign to clean up the religious site after it was hit by a plague of locusts.
Social media users in recent days have posted images and videos of swarms of locust infesting the Mosque of Mecca in western Saudi Arabia.
Mecca's municipal authority issued a statement on Monday, announcing that it had tasked specialized teams of sanitation workers to tackle the infestation. "We have harnessed all efforts available to speed up the eradication of the insects in the interest of the safety and comfort of guests to God's house," it said. The authority also posted images of cleaners spraying insecticide the mosque's sewage system and water drains around the Great Mosque.
The mosque, which is the focal point of the hajj, draws in millions of Muslim pilgrims each year. The Gulf region is occasionally hit by voracious locust swarms.
Authorities at the mosque in Islam have launched a campaign to clean up the religious site after it was hit by a plague of locusts.

In 1977 the Jewish music scene was quite different than today. MBD had already released a few albums, with the album "I'd Rather Pray and Sing" being released the year before, Avraham Fried hadn't yet began his professional adult career. Instead there was the Ohr Chodosh, Yeshiva Diaspora, the Rabbi's Sons, and some others. Even the boys choirs of today were either just starting out or non existent. While Miami Boys choir was in the process of being established that very year, Tzlil V'zemer was still a few years away from forming, and the Yeshiva Boys choir a few decades.

In the USA there was Eli Teitelbaum's Pirchei Boys Choir, in England, Yigal Calek and the London School of Jewish Song. Yigal Calek a legendary composer and choir director was so popular back then, that in the early 1970's a young MBD once opened for a concert by the the London group.
Established in 1968, the London School of Jewish Song released in 1976 "London Live" an 11 track record of songs recorded live at concerts while touring Europe and the USA.
The footage below features a song off of the "London Live" album, as they performed live on a local Minneapolis television network, prior to their Chanukah concert arranged by Chabad of Minnesota, directed by Rabbi Moshe Feller.
The clip below begins right where the clip of Part 1 ends. The reporter breifly intevies some of the boys, followed by the choir's performance of "Ani Maamin."
Watch below the Pirchei London Choir sing "Ani Maamin."
Composed by Yigal Calek
Arranged by Yisroel Lamm

Firefighters Rescue People from Cars Swept into River
Firefighters and Police rescued three people from cars swept into the Hilazon River, a northern stream in the lower Galilee, by a flash flood on Monday, according to the spokesperson for the Firefighter's Northern Rescue Unit.
Early Monday morning, two jeeps with a total of three people inside were driving under Route 804. Due to the rising water, the road flooded, trapping the three individuals in their cars, and sweeping their vehicles away with the current of the Hilazon.
Four teams of firefighters rushed to the scene, rescuing thetravelers with a civilian crane.
Police also blocked Route 90 in both directions to and from Tiberias.
The winter season has caused an uptick of floods and stormy weather.
On Monday morning alone, the police have received dozens of phone calls from residents in Arraba and nearby communities, asking for help and rescue assistance, according to the Police Spokesperson’s Unit.
Residents are trapped in vehicles and homes, which endangers children, adults and the elderly, who could be exposed to the risk of drowning or hypothermia.
Additionally, snow has been piling up on Mount Hermon, and there have even been reports that snow could fall in Jerusalem Wednesday evening.
The Hilazon is the same river that took the life Cpl. Evyatar Yosefi in the beginning of January. Yosefi, 20, from Givat Shmuel, who served in the Gadsar paratrooper reconnaissance battalion, was swept away while participating in a navigation training exercise. His unit had been hiking around the stream working in pairs to learn how to navigate in the wilderness.

Baby Gender Reveal Goes Bad for Iowa Mom
A three-year-old boy threw a tantrum, dropping to the floor with disappointment, after he discovered that he would soon have a younger sister.
A mother from east Iowa filmed her three-year-old son Tate while he opened a cardboard box filled with balloons as the gender of his soon-to-be sibling was revealed.
When several pink balloons appeared from the box and he found out that he would have a little sister rather than a brother, Tate began screaming and crying before running into his bedroom and slamming the door.

Moose Strolls Through Hospital
A moose on the loose in an Alaska hospital building has given visitors and staff a memorable start to the year.
Stephanie Hupton, who works in a physical therapy office in the Anchorage building, was one of those who caught the moose on tape after a patient told her security were monitoring the animal's movement, reports the Associated Press.
Security officers used yellow wet floor signs to try prod the moose away, but it wasn't in any hurry, wandering around the premises and eating some plants before causally using the motion-activated doors to make its exit.
A hospital spokeswoman said the animal got inside through the motion-activated doors which were stuck open because of extreme cold in the city.
The greenery and warm lobby were likely appealing to the moose, which spent about 10 minutes inside.
It was later seen hanging around a nearby parking lot.
Other than to the plants, no damage or injuries were reported.
