Rioters in Jerusalem Protest Autopsy of Baby

The young baby of a haredi family who was hospitalized last week following injuries sustained at a day-care center has died, prompting violent demonstrations by some of the haredi community against an autopsy ordered by the Jerusalem Magistrate’s Court.

The baby, Moshe Refael, was a grandson of Mayor of Beit Shemesh Moshe Abutbul.

The four-month-old baby suffered severe brain damage allegedly as the result of being shaken by a care giver and died at Hadassah University Medical Center in Jerusalem’s Ein Kerem on Thursday morning, 10 days after he was admitted for treatment.

Dozens of haredi men protested violently during the course of Thursday afternoon when the Jerusalem Magistrate’s Court ordered that an autopsy of the deceased child be conducted to determine the cause of death.

The family of the child appealed to the Supreme Court to overturn the magistrate court’s decision however due to the restrictions in Jewish law against autopsies in cases which will not help save other lives.

At the same time, Edah Haredit Rabbi Yitzhak Tuviah Weiss called on his followers to protest the decision. Protesters took to the central Kikar Shabbat thoroughfare in the haredi neighborhood of Mea Shearim in Jerusalem early Thursday afternoon to demonstrate, blocking traffic, burning trash cans and throwing stones at police forces who arrived at the scene.

The protests and violent confrontations with the police continued into the late afternoon with traffic blocked for several hours. Mounted police and water cannons were eventually deployed to disperse the rioters.

In light of the riots, the Zaka organization arranged for an MRI scan to be conducted on the body to try and determine the cause of death without an autopsy. The Supreme Court was expected to rule by the early evening whether or not an autopsy would need to be conducted following the MRI scan.

Seals Learn to Paint and Play Music

It may be the most unlikely thing imaginable for seals to be able to do - but an aquarium in Russia has taught some of its marine mammals to play musical instruments.

Baikal seals at Baikal Seal Aquarium in the city of Irkutsk have been training in the fine arts and have even mastered such other skills as painting.

Two seals Winnie-the-Pooh and Laska recently showcased their talents by painting strokes on a canvas and playing brass and woodwind instruments to entertain families with a special New Year's show.

Slacklining Hundred Metres Above Waterfalls and Cliffs

Daredevils have taken slacklining to new heights in Australia, walking atop a wire some 100 metres above colossal waterfalls and rugged cliffs.

The gravity defying feat was filmed in Kanangra Falls in Australia's Blue Mountains as a group of brave slackliners were the first to dangle above the breathtaking scenery.

The breathtaking video shows the adrenaline-seeking athletes balancing above crashing waterfalls and lush bushlands with nothing more than a single safety line tethering them to the rope under their feet.

Yahaduton Clip Encourages "Hakhel"

The Yahaduton channel presents this short clip, spreading the concept of "Shnas Hakel."

The Lubavitcher Rebbe stressed that although the Mitzvah of Hakel only applied in Yeruslayim during the time of the Beis Hamikdash, the concept of Hakel still applies to every Jew throughout the world. The Rebbe encouraged "Hakhel" gatherings for young and old, where the deeper meaning of Hakehl was discussed, a Dvar Torah to be shared and resolutions to increase in Torah and Mitzvos are made, all the while increasing in Jewish unity.

Color Changing Cake

It was the question that divided the internet earlier this year as people were confronted with a magical color changing dress that seemed to be white and gold to some and blue and black to others.

Now the internet is ablaze with what seems to be a multi-hued cake that changes color depending on the angle it's viewed from.

Baker CharlotteSometime shows a cake that morphs from blue, green and purple to orange, yellow and pink.

Charlotte, who appears work in the bakery at Karsch's Village Market, US, is shown spinning the cake on a rotating stand, where it swiftly changes colours.

The chameleon cake has divided the opinion of commenters, some who claim that it's a fake whilst others have attempted to explain the technique to create the illusion.

World’s Longest Glass Suspension Bridge

It's called Haohan Qiao - Brave Men's Bridge in English. The 300-meter-long overpass in Shiniuzai National Park in southern China has a bottom made of glass, allowing walkers to see the stomach-churning view below their feet.

The recently completed span is a glass walkway suspended a stomach-flipping 180 meters (590 feet) above a sheer drop in China's central Hunan Province.

Haohan Qiao, as it's known in Chinese, is the latest in a series of glass-floored attractions to open in China and the rest of the world. Despite its terror-inducing appearance, its creators say the bridge in the Shiniuzhai National Geological Park is perfectly safe.

Each of the glass panes is 24 millimeters thick and 25 times stronger than normal glass.

"The bridge we build will stand firm even if tourists are jumping on it," a worker who constructed the bridge told the state-owned China News Service.

"The steel frame used to support and encase the glass bridge is also very strong and densely built, so even if a glass is broken, travelers won't fall through."

Haohan Qiao was originally a wooden bridge before the park experimented by replacing a small section with glass in 2014. It decided to increase the thrill by revamping the whole overpass earlier this year, making it China's first all-glass suspension bridge.

"Shimshon (Samson) called out to Hashem (God) and said 'Hashem Elokim! Remember me and strengthen me just this one time, O G-d, and I will exact vengeance from the Plishtim (Philistines) for one of my two eyes'."
Shoftim/Judges 16:28

A word from Dov: "Shimshon Hagibor was left helpless. The Plishtim had cut off his hair and gouged out his eyes. He was forced into entertaining thousands of people who couldn't wait to see him die. At this point Shimshon demonstrated for us a big yesod in Yiddishkeit; he cried out to Hashem. The situation was hopless! He had no strength and was totally vulnerable but he knew the truth. He knew that everything is from Hashem. He knew that he could be the weakest of the weak, but with Hashem's help anything is possible. According to nature there was no way he could have pulled down those pillars holding up thousands of cheering Plishtim! But Shimshon knew that there is no such thing as nature. Hashem defines reality and He can portray it however He pleases. So Shimshon asked Hashem for strength to exact vengeance from the Plishtim, and Hashem came through.

We all have our situations where we feel like a Shimshon; tied in chains, totally hopeless. But if we stop and think we will realize that it is never hopeless. Hashem is always there waiting for us to cry out to him! There is nothing He can't Help us with! Whether its a tough Tosfos, shidduch, or illness, Hashem has the answers. All we have to do is put our trust in Him. "Karov Hashem l'chol kor'av, l'chol asher yik'riuhu b'emes." Close is Hashem to all who call upon Him, to all who call upon Him sincerely."

Like the Magid Me'Mezritch says: There are three things we can learn from babies: They're always happy, they never sit idle, and when they want something- they cry for it."

Powerful Story About Chocolate During The Holocaust

In this short five-minute interview with Francine Christophe from France tells an extraordinary tale. Francine was born August 18, 1933, and she shows the star that she was forced to wear on her chest as a child, like all Jews. She comments how large it was for an eight-year-old child, and how she was sent to the Bergen-Belsen camp. She makes mention that the children of war were privileged because they were allowed to bring a bag of small items.

Francine’s mother packed two little pieces of chocolate and said, “We’ll keep this for a day when I see you’ve collapsed completely, and really need help. I’ll give you this chocolate and you’ll feel better.” Francine’s mother was the barracks chief and brought the chocolate to a woman in labor. She told Francine that it might help the woman feel better after giving birth. After the woman had given birth to a feeble child, the camp was soon liberated. Decades later, when Francine had a child of her own, she organized a lecture on the theme, “If the survivors of concentration camps had had counseling in 1945, what would have happened?”

Many people came to the lecture, but one, in particular, stood out. She came to the podium and asked for Francine, where she took out a piece of chocolate and said, “I am the baby.”

Raccoon Caught In Cafe Doughnut Heist

A raccoon put his ninja skills to use in a stealthy doughnut-stealing mission at a Canadian cafe. The furry masked thief has been caught in the act by one of the customers,

The raccoon descended from a coffee-shop ceiling, artfully reaching for a shelf full of pastries.

“If he falls out of that hole it’s gonna hurt,” one of the amused onlookers says.

But the raccoon held his own: In seconds, he grabs a doughnut and flees back to the shadows. The whole caper was caught on camera and was shared online.

The doughnut-stealing raccoon was quickly compared to "Pizza Rat" from the New York subway. The rodent captured the world’s attention earlier this year, when it was caught on video dragging a slice of pizza down a series of subway steps.
