The Jewish Cantonists who Said "No!" to the Czar

300 boys and girls assembled at a Chanukah Ralley in Moscow Russia. They read Tehihilim, recited Pesukim and listen to the words of Rabbi Berel Lazar, followed by a thrilling production by the boys of Cheder Menachem Moscow, depicting story of Cantonists  in the Czar's army who gave up his life Al Kiddush Hashem.

Cantonists were Jewish boys who were drafted to military service at the age of twelve and placed for their six-year military education in cantonist schools. They were required to serve in the Imperial Russian army for 25 years after the completion of their studies. According to the "Statute on Conscription Duty" signed by Czar Nicholas I of Russia on August 26, 1827, Jews were made liable to personal military service and were subject to the same conscription quota as all other tax-paying estates in the Russian Empire.

The first 1827 draft involved some 1,800 Jewish conscripts; half of them were children.

There were some significant differences in treatment of Jews and non-Jews: all others were required to provide conscripts between 18 and 35, while for Jews the age limit was 12–25, and it was left to the discretion of the Jewish "Kahal" to choose conscripts from whatever age they decided. Thus in practice, Jewish children were often conscripted as young as eight or nine years old.

The official policy was to encourage their conversion to the state religion of Orthodox Christianity and Jewish boys were coerced to baptism. As kosher food was unavailable, they were faced with the necessity of abandoning of Jewish dietary laws. Initially conversions were few, but after the escalation of missionary activities in the cantonist schools in 1844, about one third of all Jewish cantonists would have undergone conversion and intermarriage R"L. Most never returned to their homes.

The cantonist policy was abolished by Tsar Alexander II's decree on 26 August 1856, in the aftermath of the Russian defeat in the Crimean war. All unconverted cantonists and recruits under the age of 20 were returned to their families. The underage converted cantonists were given to their godparents. However the implementation of the abolition took nearly 3 years.

It is estimated that between 30,000 to 70,000 Jewish boys served as cantonists, their numbers were disproportionately high in relation to the total number of cantonists.  In general Jews comprised a disproportionate number of recruits (ten for every thousand of the male population as opposed to seven out of every thousand),.

Dvar Torah Parshas Vayigash 5776

Have you ever taken a look back on your life and seen how the worst days were the times you matured and grew the most? The most challenging times were those moments that formed the person you are today? Can you see the good, even in the darkest of times?

In this week's episode of Weekly Insights with Rabbi Lankry of congregation Ohr Chaim of Monsey, NY, we explore how Yaakov realized when being reunited with his son Yosef how all the days of sadness and absence from his son were all truly good days. This week shows us that both G-d's attribute of mercy and attribute of justice are really both one in the same. We sometimes only see it after the fact.

Rabbi Benny's Hilarious Torah Thought - The One with All the Crying - Vayigash - When Yosef reveals himself to his brothers, him and Benyomin embrace and weep together, because they each foresaw the other's future suffering and destruction... But why weep for the other guy when they should have each just wept for themselves??

Best Way to Move Mountain Goats

How do you move a mountain goat nearly a hundred miles? With a helicopter.

Mountain goats were introduced to Utah in the late 1960s, and since the initial release of six goats, their population has increased to more than 2,000. When a group gets too large for its range, the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources captures and moves some of the goats to other populations throughout the state. The best way to capture the goats is to shoot them with a net gun, strap them in a harness, and then move them by helicopter. The process is mostly harmless to the goats, though they may suffer small cuts when tangled in the net. Netting is safer for the goats than using tranquilizers, as a partially tranquilized goat could be hurt even more. A veterinarian is on hand to make sure they're healthy and safe before being released.

Deputy Jumps into Moving Truck After Driver Passes Out

A Nebraska sheriff's deputy jumped into the cab of a runaway semitrailer after the driver apparently passed out at the wheel, stopping the vehicle from possibly crashing off a busy viaduct bridge.

Deputies responding to a 911 call about a reckless semi on U.S. Highway 81 caught up with the truck in Madison County, but it wouldn't stop.

The truck slowed as it neared Norfolk, 110 miles northwest of Omaha, allowing Deputy Todd Volk to leap into action. He jumped from a cruiser onto the highway, then into the truck's cab, where he was able to stop the big rig on the bridge.

Volk says the driver appeared to be sick and officials said it may have been a diabetic reaction.

A Movement On Trial

Watch an excerpt of JEM’s “A Movement on Trial.” This documentary pulls back the curtain on the fascinating saga of the violation of Lubavitch’s sacred manuscripts and books – and their ultimate triumph

“For all generations…this should be established as an auspicious day”  – The Lubavitcher Rebbe, 5 Teves 5748

From the Rebbe’s first public references to the theft of Lubavitch’s treasured manuscripts in the summer of 1985, it was clear that this was not merely a legal challenge, but also as a spiritual struggle over the soul of the movement, and over the very definition of what a Rebbe is.

A Movement on Trial begins to pull back the cover on a painful yet fascinating saga. The Lubavitcher Rebbe’s ultimate victory – or in the Rebbe’s words, “the victory of the books” – and the celebration that followed have been forever enshrined in the narrative of the Lubavitch movement in modern times.

Experience events as they unfold, together with Chasidim at 770 – from the Rebbe’s first talk on the subject through the court battle, the victory, the books’ return, and the Rebbe’s post-victory addresses on the subject.

The complete documentary is available to purchase at the JEMStore.com, and at Judaica stores.

TV Reporter Report's on Bank Robbery Spots Suspect

A KIMT News 3 reporter became part of the story Tuesday when a suspected bank robber he was reporting on ran past him during his live shot.

According to the station's website, reporter Adam Sallet was reporting live in Rochester, MN on a suspected Sterling State Bank robbery. Just as he started his live shot on scene during the MidDay News, he's stopped by a bank employee who runs out of the building, points off screen and tells Sallet the bank robber just ran by.

"What? Oh, that's the robber," he says. "Uh, this is live TV, folks. That's the robber that just went by."

Before Sallet runs off screen, he says, "I gotta go here and call 911. I'll talk to you later."

The station reports the 36-year-old suspected robber was arrested after allegedly trying to rob the Rochester bank again. He previously escaped police after an attempted robbery of the bank on Monday.

A Powerful Lesson - Father & Son with a Badchan

Yoely Lebewitz sings to the crowd at Keiravtuni, telling over a powerful and emotional story which he not only witnessed but was involved with himself.

The story begins after Yoely was hired to perform as Badchen at a specific wedding and the family of the Chosson refused to help him with the necessary information he would need to call up the Chosson's father to the Mitzvah Tantz.

Yoely, having grown up himself with friction between his parents, was all too familiar with this scenario. He told the family that they should kindly find another Badchen since there is no way he will participate in a wedding where a father will not have the honor to dance with his son.

Watch below the entire story.

Keiravtuni is a fast growing organization that was created with the purpose of bringing Yidden closer to Hashem, to their families, friends and communities.

Drone Catcher

Tokyo police are taking to the skies for drone chases.

The Japanese city's Metropolitan Police Department created drone squads on Thursday to enforce its ban against the flying devices, using a 10' by 6.5' net to catch them.

In a demonstration clip, the police drone zips through the sky and easily nets a small, white quad copter trying to escape, then hovers down and releases it on the ground in front of the police pilot.

The ban is enforced around Japan's important locations, like the prime minister's home and the Imperial Palace. The trial drone squad only has one copter flying, which took to the skies on Thursday,

It is expected to be a fully-fledged flock by February, with 10 drones patrolling Tokyo's skies,

Tokyo police have been up in arms at potential drone security risks since one of the devices dropped radioactive soil on the prime minister's roof in April, sparking terrorist attacks concerns.

Officers will use a loudspeaker to warn the suspicious drone's pilot to leave before the netting-copter is sent out to capture the device in flight. Tokyo officials decided to use a net to make sure the drones wouldn't fall and hurt any people below.
