Serving in The IDF Vs. Learning Torah in Yeshiva

A Sicha (talk) by the Lubavitcher Rebbe ZY"A. 6 Tishrei, 5728 -- October 10, 1967.

The Gemoro relates that Dovid Hamelech and his general, Yoav Ben Tzeruya, supplemented each other. Dovid was immersed in the study of Torah, while Yoav went out to battle. If not for the merit of David's Torah, Yoav would not have been victorious in his wars, and if not for Yoav's battles, David would not have had the ability to study Torah.

Today, the bravery and sacrifice of Israel's soldiers on the front lines will continue to meet success when bolstered and secured by their "spiritual supply corps" -- the Torah study of the "support troops" back home. For the Torah is our deed of ownership to the Holy Land. This partnership will keep the military miracles coming.

From the author: "October is National Pizza Month, so what better way to celebrate than eating a lot of pizza and helping someone at the same time."

More from the author: "I've thought a lot about what the message is behind "Giving Back" videos. It's not so much a message that you need to give money away in order to be happy, but more a message that it just feels good to give whatever you are able to give.

When I found out Pizza deliverers can make as little as $4.00 an hour in Utah, I wanted to help out."

The medical condition of Rabbi Ovadia Yosef improved slightly over the weekend, although he remains seriously ill. His team of doctors at Hadassah Ein Karem hospital noted in particular that they were able to reduce the dosage of medication for controlling the rabbi’s blood pressure over Shabbat. Rabbi Ovadia Yosef’s son and Sephardi Chief Rabbi Yitzhak Yosef said in a Torah lesson Saturday night, usually given by Yosef himself, that his father had briefly opened his eyes on Saturday morning and moved his arm.

14 Year Old Christian Boy Speaks in Israel

In cooperation with the Har Bracha community in the Shomron (Samaria) and Rabbi Eliezer Melamed, the head of the Har Bracha yeshiva, dozens of Christian volunteers from the United States joined families in the year's annual harvest of crops.

Despite previous accusations that HaYovel were a missionary group, Rabbi Melamed described the event as "a blessed phenomena of non-Jews seeing the truth and pledging themselves to help the Jewish Nation in the heartland of the Jewish Land."

At the event in Har Bracha, 14-year-old volunteer, Josiah Hilton, spoke to the crowd of people and thanked the residents of Har Bracha for "making the decision to live in Israel's heartland and for believing in the promises of God and following His Torah."

MBD and Michoel Streicher sing Lo Omus, composed by Reb Boruch Chait upon request by Menachem OBM.

Im Hashem Lo Yivneh Bayis, sung here for the first time.

The following is a note from Mordechai Ben David, printed on the cover of the concert album:

It was a winter day in 1988. While driving down Rechov Malchei Yisroel (Geula) towards "Mea-Sh'arm", i stopped for a traffic jam and i noticed a young boy across the road staring at me. Walking straight up to my window he asked, "are you MBD?" before i could say yes he continued, "my best friend is in the hospital with the terrible sickness, you must come visit him, you'll have the biggest Mitzvah. He loves your music." He gave me an offer i couldn't refuse.

The next morning at 8:00am he was knocking at my hotel room. When we arrived at "Hadassah" it was the 1st day after 6 weeks of quarantine, that Menachem was out on a wheel chair for some fresh air with a mask covering his mouth He was overjoyed to see me. We took some pictures and spoke for a while. It was the beginning of a very unique relationship. Menachem was always surrounded by many friends and neighbors who always came around to help in every way possible. The boys form the neighboring Yeshiva "Ateres" in Bayit V'gan would always come around to study, to play, to sing or whatever would lift the spirits of the Erental family. I had the opportunity on several occasions to join in the most wonderful "Melave Malkas" in the Erental home. We sang and danced for many hours. Click Here for More
