Solar Eclipse From 35,000 Feet

A solar eclipse last week caused an Alaska Airlines flight to redirect briefly so passengers could enjoy the view at about 35,000 feet in the air.

The change of plans was established a year ago, when passenger Joseph Rao, associate astronomer at the American Museum of Natural History’s Hayden Planetarium, realized that the eclipse's path would intersect with his flight path — almost half an hour before his flight arrived, according to Alaska Airlines blog.

Rao called the airline, and officials decided to adjust the flight so passengers could experience the eclipse from the air.

The University of Arizona’s Steward Observatory's Glenn Schneider organized the new plan for the flight and Rao presented them to airline officials, who moved the departure time to 25 minutes later.

The flight from Anchorage to Honolulu held about a dozen astronomers and "eclipse chasers," along with about 150 other passengers.

Chasing the shadow of the moon: To intercept eclipse, Alaska Airlines adjusts flight plan to delight astronomers, some of the astronomers and "eclipse chasers" on the flight travel the world to see eclipses, according to the blog. This one was visible over Southeast Asia and the Pacific Ocean.

A solar eclipse occurs when the moon gets between Earth and the sun, and the moon casts a shadow over Earth. A solar eclipse can only take place at the phase of new moon, when the moon passes directly between the sun and Earth and its shadows fall upon Earth's surface

Oldest Living Man Presented With Guinness Plaque

A one hundred and twelve-year-old Holocaust survivor is the world's oldest living man. Israel Kristal has been given that official title by the Guinness Book of World Records.

Chaim Kristal, son of Israel Kristal: "My father is a very optimistic person. When he saw a glass with half water, he is very pleased with the half of water that is full. He never sees half who is empty, he never see."

Israel was born in Poland. He moved to Israel in 1950 after surviving the Auschwitz death camp.

Surveillance: Man Stealing Charity Box for Sick Kids

A man was caught on camera stealing a Chai Lifeline charity box from Bagels N Greens in Boro Park filled with hundreds of dollars meant to send children with cancer to summer camp.

There is a chain attached to the Chai Lifeline Giving Box now, a sad reminder of what happened in Borough Park.

Surveillance captured a man in a red hoodie slipping the box under his sweater and then, with hundreds of dollars meant for children with cancer, walking away.

"That hurts already. It's not like he's stealing from my store, he's stealing their bread and butter," said David Baum, the store manager.

"We have a camp for children with cancer and children with other types of illnesses, Camp Simcha and Camp Simcha Special, and these charity boxes allow these kids to go to camp and have a wonderful summer that's medically supervised," said Rabbi Simcha Scholar, of Chai Lifeline.

Police are hoping someone recognizes the man in the distinctive red hoodie with a bald head and sunglasses, so he can be prosecuted.

Either way, the Chai Lifeline Giving Box will stay chained up.

I'm Donating My Bar Mitzvah Party to 300 Children

Does Age Matter? How one 12 Year Old will transform 300 childrens' lives

Nachaliel Jacobs had a dream. Although he is a rather typical 12 year old yeshiva boy in New York, he wanted his upcoming Bar Mitzvah party to be as atypical as can be.

He decided to forgo the usual Bar Mitzva celebrations, gift getting and inviting of classmates and instead create something amazing. He decided to create a movement.

Nachaliel's amazing hypersensitivity to others shocked his family and friends.

He singlehandedly decided launch the initial funding for, and fundraise for children, who are complete strangers.

His dream? To perform the ultimate expression of a Bar Mitzva - dancing and singing with children his own age, who have cancer, and to put a smile on their faces. For a few short hours, Nachaliel wants to show them a world of laughter, joy and giggling.

Something that many of them haven't seen for months or years.

His research discovered Zichron Menachem, an organization that raises money and provides treatment, hope and smiles for children with cancer.

Nachaliel's parents set out to make his wish a reality. They contacted Zichron Menachem and began to organize a Purim carnival party at Zichron Menachem's treatment center in Jerusalem, inviting over 300 cancer children and their families to participate in a Purim event that Zichron Menachem did not have the funding for.

Nachaliel cherished every dollar he worked for in his short 12 years of wealth accumulation. At a young age, he bought live chickens, built a chicken coop in his backyard, cleaned and sold the eggs, then sold the chickens. He saved every quarter or dollar from any loving grandparent or parent. He has now committed every penny of his savings to this event with a warm smile and generous heart. Raising the bar even higher, he started the fundraising campaign. $18,000 would be needed to pay for the food, jugglers, music, face painters, clowns, contests, prizes, trips, magicians, activity booths, games, shows and Shaloch Manos gift bags for the kids. Nachaliel committed to Zichron Menachem to raise the needed funds. So far, his perseverance has raised a significant portion, but his work isn't complete. Your help is needed. By donating today, you can be a partner in something unique. Something amazing.

Donate now by visiting www.charidy.com/300smiles and show Nachaliel that everybody can make a difference, no matter how young or old they are and that age doesn't really matter at all.

Israeli Hiker Finds Rare 2,000 Year Old Gold Coin

Israel’s Antiquities Authority says a hiker has found a rare, nearly 2,000-year-old gold coin.

The authority said Monday that the ancient coin appears to be only the second of its kind to have been found. It said London’s British Museum possesses the other coin.

The coin, from the year A.D. 107, bears the image of Augustus, the first emperor of the Roman Empire. It was minted as part of a series of coins honoring Roman rulers. Antiquities Authority official Donald T. Ariel said the coin may have paid part of the salary of a Roman soldier.

The hiker, Laurie Rimon, happened upon the shiny coin on a recent walk in Israel’s eastern Galilee region. The authority said she will receive a certificate of appreciation for handing over the coin.

Jewish Holocaust Survivor World’s Oldest Living Man

A 112-year-old Israeli who lived through both World Wars and survived the Nazi concentration camp Auschwitz is the world’s oldest man, Guinness World Records announced on Friday.

Guinness said in a statement that Israel Kristal is 112 years and 178 days old as of March 11.

Marco Frigatti, Head of Records for Guinness awarded Kristal a certificate at his home in Haifa on Friday.

“I don’t know the secret for long life,” Guinness quoted Kristal as saying. “I believe that everything is determined from above and we shall never know the reasons why.”

“There have been smarter, stronger and better looking men then me who are no longer alive. All that is left for us to do is to keep on working as hard as we can and rebuild what is lost,” he added.

Guinness said Kristal was born in 1903 to an Orthodox Jewish family near the town of Zarnow in Poland. He moved to Lodz to work in the family confectionary business in 1920, it said. During the Nazi occupation of Poland he was confined to the ghetto there and later sent to the Auschwitz and other concentration camps. His first wife and two children were killed in the Holocaust.

Kristal survived World War II weighing only 37 kilograms (about 81 pounds) — the only survivor of his large family. He moved to Israel in 1950 with his second wife and their son, Guinness said.

In Israel, Kristal “continued to grow both his family and his successful confectionary business,” Guinness said.

Suspect Charged In Crown Heights Hate Crime Stabbing

A Manhattan man was charged last week Thursday in connection with three recent stabbings and slashings – including one that has been deemed a hate crime.

The mother of the Hasidic man who police said was attacked in a hate crime was demanding more answers from police late Thursday.

The suspect is a 26-year-old homeless man who allegedly attacked two male joggers in Prospect Park Wednesday night. Late Thursday at the 70th Precinct police station, investigators said he also confessed to stabbing the Hasidic Jewish man in the back in Crown Heights last month.
