Dog Strategically Gets His Chicken Nuggets

While her owner, Rodd Scheinerman, was out of the house, the dog was caught on camera strategically getting ready-to-eat chicken nuggets out of the hot micro-oven sitting on the kitchen counter. The video captures the beagle at first moving restlessly around the kitchen floor as she smells the food being cooked.

She tries to jump up onto the counter but just can’t reach. Lucy then moves around the dining table until a brilliant plan pops into her mind  - the chair! She strategically pushes the chair from underneath the table with her paw so it is close enough to the kitchen counter so that she can jump up.

She balances slowly along the counter past the sink and opens the oven door with her paw. The oven is too hot inside to stick her nose in, so she uses her paw again to pull out the tray of chicken nuggets. They land on the floor and dinner is served!

Niagara Falls Freezes Over

The record-breaking chill across the U.S. and Canada was so frigid it literally stopped Niagara Falls in its tracks.
A collection of spectacular photographs have shown the moment the U.S. side of the famous falls froze before they could reach the bottom on Tuesday when the temperature hit a record low of minus 2 degrees

Aaron Harris, a photographer for Reuters, took several shots of the 167-foot frozen falls Wednesday. The ice formed on the U.S. side of the falls, which straddle the border with Canada.

While unusual, it's not the first time Niagara Falls has frozen. Photographs from the early- and mid-1900s archived at Niagara Falls Public Library appear to show frozen falls, though some experts have questioned their authenticity. Of course, the eye-catching freeze did not completely stop water from flowing.

Only once has freezing weather "caused the thousands of cubic feet of water per second flowing over the Niagara Falls to run dry, an event thought to have been caused by ice jamming and damming upriver," and that was in 1848.

Thankfully, the freezing air and 'polar vortex' that turned the cascading water to ice - and affected about 240 million people in the U.S. and southern Canada - will depart during the second half of this week, and a far-reaching January thaw will begin.

Family of Menachem Stark HY'D Offering Reward

Members of the Stark family joined with elected officials and community leaders for a press conference at the Williamsburg home of Stark’s sister this afternoon January 6 2014, hoping that an increased reward might motivate someone to come forward with information in the shocking and brutal murder of real estate developer Menachem Stark HY"D

An emotionally overwrought Abraham Buxbaum, a brother in law of the slain real estate developer, announced that an earlier reward offered by the family has been increased from $11,000 to $25,000. Stark’s brother in law Moses Strulowitz expressed frustration about the media coverage, referring to those “that love gossip and love to talk nonsense.”

Strulowitz also thanked the NYPD and the detective squad unit for their efforts in what he described as a “ruthless, gruesome murder” and stated unequivocally that as Chasidic, Orthodox Jews, no one is looking for an opportunity to avenge Stark’s death.  “We believe that everything is meant to be and that everything is from G-d,” said Strulowitz. “Good things happen from good people and the worst things happen from the worst people. G-d will punish them no matter what.”
