The World's Oldest Torah Scroll
An Italian professor believes he has found the world's oldest and most complete torah scroll safely tucked away in the archives of University of Bologna.
After the completion of carbon tests, it is believed the scroll might possibly have been written some 850 years ago. Officials say the document was originally examined by a university librarian in 1889 and dated as having been written during the 17th century. But a recent re-evaluation of the scroll by university Professor of Hebrew, Mauro Perani, discovered that the scroll was written in oriental Babylonian tradition, which makes it very old. Officials also say the scroll contains text “features” that were later “forbidden” by Maimonides in the 12th century

13-Year-Old Spells 'Knaidel' Wins Spelling Bee
As red and yellow confetti floated into his hair, the champ just stood there and cracked his knuckles, hardly the type of celebration expected from a 13-year-old. His smiles had come earlier, when he conquered "the German curse" on his way to spelling's top prize.
New York City has its first Scripps National Spelling Bee winner in 16 years. Arvind Mahankali has never had a "knaidel," but he was able to spell the German-derived Yiddish word for a matzo ball Thursday night to earn the huge trophy and more than $30,000 in cash and prizes.
"The German curse," Arvind said, "has turned into a German blessing." Arvind finished third the two previous years, eliminated both times on German words. He had everyone laughing two years ago when he pronounced "Jugendstil" as "You could steal" and saluted the crowd when he got it wrong. Last year he flubbed "schwannoma" and quickly proclaimed: "I know what I have to study."

New Water Park Ride "The Sewer Slide"
Too cheap for Six Flags? No problem. This park is free and open to the public. The only downside: Since there are not any bike lanes in Brazil, you need to be cautious and watch out for the cars nearby and you need to make sure you don't fall down the sewer at the bottom of the slide, lest you end up in the Indian Ocean.

The 1986 Murder of Yeshiva Student Chaim Weiss
The unsolved killing of a 15-year-old rabbinical student found bludgeoned to death in his dormitory at a suburban New York yeshiva in 1986 is receiving renewed attention from homicide detectives.
"There's somebody out there that knows a secret," said Lt. John Azzata, commander of the Nassau County Police homicide squad. "I'm looking for that person to give me that secret." The police held a news conference on May 28, 2013 to announce an increase of reward. The Nov. 1, 1986, slaying shocked the Orthodox Jewish community and from the beginning, police have acknowledged having no suspects.

Huge Fire At Skver Boro Park Summer Camp
A fire broke out at a Woodridge summer camp for girls (Giti Gardens) and a bungalow colony. It happened around 2 p.m. Tuesday on Glen Wild Road. The camp was not open for the season yet and no one was hurt.

Eventually Klal Yisroel looks for Hashem, but the nations beat and wound them, while their sons are killed Al Kiddush Hashem. Finding it difficult to communicate directly with Hashem, Am Yisroel looks for ways to indirectly transfer the message.

Falling Crane Tears Row Of Balconies Off Apartments
A construction crane fell on an apartment block in Kirov, Russia, crushing a row of balconies and damaging several cars parked nearby. There are 250 residents living in the building, but fortunately no one was injured in the accident.
President Peres Meets PA Leader Abbas
Hours after he publicly called for a resumption of peace talks between Israel and the Palestinian Authority, President Shimon Peres held a one-on-one meeting with PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas on Sunday night.
The meeting was held in Jordan, where both are attending the World Economic Forum. Ma’ariv reported that Peres told Abbas that only at the negotiating table will the sides be able to bridge their differences, while Abbas replied that peace will come only when an independent Palestinian state is established. Obama Forgets to Salute - Awkwardly Makes It Up
President Barack Obama forgot protocol while boarding Marine One en route to Annapolis, Maryland. Obama did not salute the Marine standing at the bottom of the helicopter while boarding. Upon realizing the faux pas, the president jogged back down to shake hands with the Marine and spoke privately with him before entering the helicopter again.
It’s not the first time Obama’s Marine salutation made news. In February 2009, Obama shook hands with the Marine outside of Marine One, when normally presidents just salute and board the helicopter.
