"Aseres Yemei Teshuva" Math Problem?
A talk by the Lubavitcher Rebbe, 6 Tishrei, 5747 · October 9, 1986.
The Novi Yeshaya declares: "Seek Hashem when He can be found, call to Him when He is near." The Gemara explains: "This refers to the Ten Days of Repentance between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur."
Torah is precise. Why does the Gemara speak of ten days "between" Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, when in fact there are only seven?
Even while they share the general theme of repentance, Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur each contain a unique quality. Rosh Hashanah is a day of coronation of Hashem as our King. In the process of recommitting ourselves as His subjects, we also repent "out of love" -- which is why the liturgy does not mention anything negative. Yom Kippur is a day which, on its own, brings atonement for sins; at the same time, it is also the culmination of the journey of repentance that began ten days earlier, on Rosh Hashanah.
On the one hand, they each have their own special quality; on the other, they share the overarching theme of the Ten Days of Repentance.

Kamah Tov Yihiyeh - Music Video
Six year old Shachar has bone cancer. His dream was to sing in a recording studio. Ezer Mitzion arranged it for him and little Shachar's dream came true last week.
Shachar was joined by his friends -- other cancer patients who are also cared for by Ezer Mizion's cancer support services.
The song Shachar and his friends chose to sing was a popular Hebrew song titled: "How Good it will be in the New Year". The song talks of the simple dreams that people have, of being together with family and appreciating the little things in life.
For Shachar and his friends these things are not little. Because they are in the middle of a fierce struggle with cancer. It is a life and death battle.
The optimism, courage and hope these kids radiate instils hope in each one of us for a brighter, happier, healthier year ahead.

Murdoch Hails Israel's Economic Success
Media mogul Rupert Murdoch delivered a speech at a conference geared towards encouraging economic investment in Israel, in which he described the Jewish state "as a light unto the nations" and praised the country's "creativity," collective "brain power," and tremendous achievements in the face of unyielding threats.
Murdoch also recounted that twenty years ago he invested in a small Israeli company based out of an apartment in Jerusalem, and that what he "got from it in terms of financial and technological returns has been critical to his company in recent years."
Murdoch also weighed in on the recent controversy prompted by the removal from the Democratic Party platform of any reference to Jerusalem as Israel's capital. According to Murdoch, "what was good for King David is good for me. So, for me, Jerusalem is the capital of Israel."

Rosh Hashanah Wishes from The The Maccabeats
From the author:
"Took a little break from our Rosh Hashanah preparations to put together this short clip. As far as we know, this is the first time an a cappella group (or any group, for that matter) has recorded whistling in harmony. The tune we are whistling is over eleven centuries old and is traditionally sung as an introduction to the evening (maariv) high holiday services.
We'll get back to singing in our next video. We have some great projects in the works for 5773!"

New York Rabbi Teams Up With Winemaker
Through a member of his congregation at the Chabad of the Tri-Valley, CA Rabbi Resnick hooked-up with Livermore Valley winemaker Mitchell Katz, whose winery turns out some of the valley's esteemed vintages. Though Katz isn't Jewish, he was open to something new. Katz decided to throw in the grapes, the machinery and the know-how to the fledgling winemaker, with the understanding all the sweat and elbow grease would be handled by Rabbi Resnick.
The pair hopes to turn-out about seventy cases of kosher cabernet in time for the 2013 Rosh Hashanah. Resnick is holding a contest to let his congregation choose a name for the wine, which he claims will be the first kosher wine produced in Livermore.
