Thousands Evacuate as Wildfires Spreads in Israel

Some sixty thousand people were evacuated from their homes in Haifa Thursday November 24 2016. as a wave of wildfires threatened the bay metropolis, bolstered by high winds and dry conditions that have contributed to a spate of blazes across the country this week.

Residents of a total of 11 neighborhoods in the city were told to leave their homes, as fires in at least five locations consumed homes and businesses. By late afternoon, more than 100 people in the Haifa area had been treated for fire-related injuries, mostly smoke inhalation.

National police chief Roni Alsheich said some of the fires were set by arsonists, “presumably with nationalist motives,” but most were not. He said some suspects were in custody. Top Arab MK Ayman Odeh called the arsonists “enemies of us all.”

Greece, Russia, Cyprus and Turkey were among the nations that sent firefighting planes and other equipment to help fight the fires.

“The fire is not under control; residents should quickly evacuate,” the Haifa fire chief said, as eyewitnesses described firefighters having little success in checking the onslaught of the flames.

Grandma Puts Baby Into Crib

A grandmother in Huntsville, Alabama, who tried putting a baby to bed has tripped into viral infamy.

Last Friday, Valerie Routh Sharp was putting her granddaughter to sleep in her crib. Since Sharp is only 5 feet tall, she required a step stool to get up high enough to put the child down.

A baby monitor filmed Sharp falling into the crib head first, never letting go of the baby girl.

Luckily, Sharp, 61, and the baby were OK.

Giant Sinkhole Repaired In Two Minutes

Of course these Japanese street workers needed a little longer than two minutes, but for this really gigantic sinkhole in the street, even the seven days the work really lasted are incredibly fast. And it is always beautiful to watch worker bees in time-lapse!

A gigantic sinkhole has opened in the southwestern Japanese city of Fukuoka, swallowing huge sections of road near underground work to extend a subway tunnel.

A 7-to 8-meter-wide hole was first reported early Tuesday 2 weeks ago, according to Motohisa Oda, a crisis management officer from the city of Fukuoka.

Nearby residents were evacuated, and five major roads cordoned off in Hakata ward in Fukuoka's business district. The gaping hole -- which started off as two smaller ones before merging into the larger cavity appeared 300 meters from the JR Hakata railway station.

The sinkhole was a whopping 27 meters wide, 30 meters long and 15 meters deep.
It is filled with water that seeped in from sewage pipes destroyed by collapsing sections of road.

Concert Stage Turns into Wedding Chupa

When performer Gad Elbaz took the stage at a recent concert in Brooklyn, the crowd was primed for his upbeat popular songs such as "Hashem Melech" and others.

Elbaz's voice then accompanied the transformation of the stage into a setting of a wedding ceremony. It came as a complete surprise to many in the crowd when a white Chuppah canopy was placed center stage.

The Chosson Pesach Charni and Kalah Avigail Chazin, descendants of Holocaust survivors, agreed to share their special day and the joy of their wedding with the thousands in attendance, highlighting Jewish survival and continuity.

While getting married on stage is not what Avigail and Pesach had planned, when they heard that the show's producers wanted to have a wedding during the show, "It just all came together," the bride said.

Legendary Composer Reb Ben Zion Shenker Passes Away

VIN News - One of the most gifted and inspired composers of Hassidic niggunim Rabbi Ben Tzion Shknker has passed away this morning Sunday November 20 2016. at the age of 91.

Shenker was born in Williamsburg in 1925, four years after his parents arrived in America.  He unknowing embarked on his musical career even before his fifth birthday when his mother would play recorded cantorial albums for him for hours at a time, giving him an appreciation for Jewish music and exposure to often complex pieces of music.

With his innate talent, Shenker developed an unusual aptitude for cantorial music at a very young age and by the time he was 12 he had been hand picked to become part of a children’s choir.

One year later, he had his own 15 minute radio program on Sunday afternoons and as a student at Yeshiva Torah Vodaath he got permission from Rav Shraga Feivel Mendlowitz to do the show as long as he returned promptly for second seder.

Shenker’s long association with Modzitz began at age 15 when he happened to spend a Shabbos meal with the Modzitzer Rebbe.  Picking up a book on Chasidic music, which included a chapter on the Modzitzer Rebbe and musical notations of some of his compositions, Shenker began singing the notes to himself.

Noticing Shenker, the Rebbe was surprised to discover that the yeshiva student was able to read and write music and over time he became the Modzitzer Rebbe’s musical secretary.

In his lifetime, Shenker is believed to charted approximately 100 Modzitzer niggunim and to have composed approximately 500 original songs.  He also served as the chazan in the Modzitzer synagogue in Brooklyn for five decades.

Gentle Giant

They make an odd couple, but a big-bodied polar bear and diminutive dog threw caution to the tundra winds and cuddled up in northern Manitoba, Winnipeg, Canada over the weekend.

"I had no idea what was going to happen, and then sure enough he started petting that dog, acted like he was a friend," David De Meulles said. "I just so happen to catch a video of a lifetime."

De Meulles recorded a video over the weekend that shows one of the Arctic predators towering over a dog, tenderly petting it
