Jews Lightly Injured at Brussels Terror Attacks

VIN News - Brussels - An unknown number of Orthodox Jews are among the thousands of passengers currently stranded in a hangar at the Brussels airport following a pair of deadly explosions this morning.  The death toll is currently at 31 with another 55 injured in the bomb blasts.

Two Belzer Chasidim are among the injured according to Kikar HaShabbat.  Chaim Winternitz, a Jerusalem resident, was in Antwerp for a family simcha and was returning home with his family at the time of the blast.  Winternitz, who sustained an injury to his leg,  has already been released from the hospital and is expected to return to Israel soon with his family.  A second unidentified Chasidic victim sustained a broken leg and is currently undergoing surgery in a Belgian hospital.

An amateur video posted to YouTube, that is being broadcasted widely by all major media outlets, shows the devastation at the airport terminal, with plumes of grey smoke pouring out of the building’s shattered windows.  Passengers can be seen fleeing the terminal and two Yiddish speaking men can be heard among the crowd, with one telling the other that they need to leave before another bomb explodes.

Yisroel Yaakov Yeret of Ichud Hatzolah was among those who was davening Shachris at the airport when the explosions took place. Yeret was on his way from Israel to the United States at the time of the attack.

Yeret said that the passengers were evacuated to a large hangar where they are being bused in groups of 50 to an unknown location.

“No one has any idea what they are going to be doing with us, where we will be,” said Yeret.  “There is no food, no drink, not even a place to charge a telephone.”

Yeret says United Hatzolah volunteers were assisting paramedics who came to treat the injured.

Help Moshe Overcome Behcet Syndrome

Moshe Arazi is a young man with an unusual story. He is a 27 year old Israeli, currently in the US for medical treatment.

He is battling Behcet’s syndrome, a rare autoimmune disease that attacks blood vessels, joints, and internal organs. Moshe unfortunately has the distinction of being one of the most severe cases of this disease that doctors have ever seen, both in Israel and the US.

The doctors in Israel were unable to offer any treatment for Moshe’s condition, so on the advice of Rav Chaim Kanievsky he traveled to the US on a special medical transport for treatment. The doctors in the rheumatology dept. at Mt. Sinai Hospital in NY have been able to offer a glimmer of hope for a treatment that hopefully will improve his condition.

Secret Mission Brings Yemen's Jews to Israel

In the midst of the bloody war in the country, 17 Yemenite Jews landed in Israel last night. They were rescued in a complicated operation, which was conducted by the Jewish Agency and made possible by the US State Department. The group of Yemenite Jews was transferred to a 3rd country from which they arrived in Israel.

Among the 17 new immigrants was Rabbi Saliman Dahari who arrived with his parents and his wife. Dahari, who brought with him believe to be an over500 year old Torah scroll, met his children upon arrival at an absorption center in Israel.

The US State Department and US government officials helped plan the complex covert mission. Officials from the Jewish Agency have been guiding the group of Yemenite Jews for the past few months and last night, the new immigrants were greeted by them upon arrival at Ben Gurion Airport.

In addition, Channel 2 News discovered that 1 of the parents of a new immigrant was the victim of an anti-Semitic stabbing recently. Currently in Yemen, only a few Jewish families who refuse to immigrate to Israel remain.

Stomach Churning: Skiing from Peak of Mountain

A winter sports enthusiast proved he had absolute nerves of steel when he skied from the very top of a mountain in the Alps.

The unidentified daredevil captured body-cam footage of him negotiating the incredibly steep slope while skiing down the Matterhorn.

Standing at a staggering 14,692 foot, the mountain, which is based in Aosta Valley in Italy and Valais in Switzerland, has one of the highest summits in Europe.

But undeterred, the skier made his way down the near-parallel drop as if he was descending a regular slope in an average resort.

The video shows the daredevil setting off at speed before throwing in some turns in order to control his descent and keep him on the narrow part of mountain. Humorously his footprints can be seen in the snow, showing where he walked up carrying his skis only moments earlier.

After making his way down the first bit relatively tentatively - the terrain sounds particularly icy as the skis make a scraping noise - the slope gets even narrower. But the man continues to ski downwards despite the fact one mistake at this point could result in him losing his life. Eventually the mountain begins to get wider and the man makes the most of skiing across it to ensure he does not pick up too much speed.

At one point he is forced to however when he struggles to turn between two large pieces of rock.

He travels quickly for a spell before regaining control, heading towards more rock and eventually slowing to a stop.

With the first section successfully negotiated the man prepares himself for the rest of his descent.

Yossi Shtendig, Yisroel Werdyger and Shira Choir - Timche

Originally composed and arranged by Mona Rosenblum for MBD's album Tumid Besimcha, Timche has since been a favorite for many bands.

This rendition of Timche was performed at a recent wedding by Yossi Shtendig and his band, joined by the incredible Shira Choir, with Yisroel Werdyger - MBD's nephew - as lead vocalist.

The Handwriting Robot

You can think of the AxiDraw as a digital printer. Except, instead of spraying ink onto paper like regular printers do, it uses any pen, pencil, or marker you place in its head, turning out printed materials that look like hand-drawn and hand-written objects just like they had from back in the day.

Billed as a “personal writing and drawing machine,” it’s a pen plotter that takes 2D images from a compatible software and recreates it by applying pen to paper. Whether you want to print a matching illustration of an image from your camera roll, a handwritten label for a package you’re sending out, or a replica line drawing of an artwork you fancy, this thing is going to get the job done.

The AxiDraw can perform its plotting task on any flat surface – just lay a sheet of paper underneath and watch it go to work. It works with both open-source graphics software Inkscape and RoboPaint (with the AxiDraw extension), so it shouldn’t be that hard to get started, with a printing area that accommodates both letter and A4-sized paper. The pen head can accommodate most any writing instruments, so you can use Sharpies, colored pencils, chalks, brushes, fountain pens, or whatever else you want. Even better, you can either angle the writing instrument vertically or at 45-degrees, with the latter effectively recreating the ideal writing angle for fountain pens. It can draw at a rate of 11 inches per second.

Israelis Killed In Suicide Bombing in Turkey

Turkish officials said three Israelis were among the five people killed in a suicide bombing that rocked a main pedestrian thoroughfare in the heart of Istanbul on Saturday. At least 11 Israelis were among the 36 injured in the explosion.

Turkish authorities identified another of the people killed as an Iranian national.

Simcha Dimri, Yonatan Suher and Avraham Goldman are identified as the Israeli fatalities in Saturday's suicide bombing attack in the Turkish city.

According to an Israeli official, two Israeli citizens killed in the suicide bombing in Istanbul were dual nationals, holding US citizenship as well.

The bodies of the Israelis killed in the terror attack were due to be repatriated to Israel on Sunday.

Earlier on Sunday morning, a delegation of Israeli medical and emergency workers returned from Turkey early Sunday with some of the Israeli citizens who were wounded in a deadly suicide bombing Saturday in Istanbul. Two planes carrying five Israeli casualties suffering light-to-moderate wounds arrived early Sunday at Ben-Gurion Airport.

Magen David Adom medical teams evacuated the wounded to Sheba Medical Center, Tel Hashomer and Ichilov Hospital in Tel Aviv. Also on Sunday, the IDF said it had sent another delegation including Home Front Command forces and Air Force and medical corps to Turkey to run an operating room and air lift wounded Israeli back home.

Six Israelis remained hospitalized in Turkey as of about 8:30 a.m. Sunday.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack.
