Elk Vs. Photographer
Great Smoky Mountains National Park
From the author: "While photographing elk at sunrise in the Cataloochee Valley of Great Smoky Mountains National Park I turned around to see what appeared to be just a curious young bull sniffing a photographer's camera. I snapped a few frames of the apparent harmless encounter.
But the elk became more interested in making trouble than simply the scent of a camera. He started physically harassing the photographer, escalating to full on head-butts.
I quickly switched the camera to video and let it roll (much of the time wondering when I should seriously consider intervening).
Most people who see this ask why the photographer seems to just take the abuse. I asked him in an email what was going through his head. This is his response:
"My first thoughts were "wow, he's getting pretty darn close here." But I've been up close before without incident. I hoped being still and passive would see him pass on. When he lowered his antlers to me, I wanted to keep my vitals protected and my head down. I felt that standing up would provoke him more and leave me more vulnerable to goring. I think that while protecting myself with my head down, having my head down was a signal that I was rutting with him."

European Rabbis March In Berlin
Some 200 Rabbis from all over Europe march towards the Brandenburg Gate and light candles in commemoration of the 75th anniversary of Kristallnacht, in Berlin, Germany, 12 November 2013. It is the first time that the Conference of European Rabbis is meeting in Berlin since Kristallnacht, when the Nazis burned synagogues, plundered Jewish businesses and started arresting Jews for deportation to concentration camps on 09 November 1938.
Organizers of the commemoration said that the candlelight procession was intended to give the rabbis the opportunity both individually and communally to reflect upon the horrors, and the anti-Jewish violence that was inflicted on the Jews during Kristallnacht 75 years ago.

NYPD Rescue Man On Verrazano Bridge
On Monday, November 11, 2013, at approximately 10:09 a.m. police responded to a 911 call of a suicidal male along the Verrazano Bridge. The man, who had driven a Dodge Caravan Brooklyn bound along the upper level of the bridge, left the vehicle with the hazards lights on and climbed out onto the outer cables.
Detectives and Police Officers from Emergency Service Squad 5 arrived and suited up in their safety harnesses. Officer Reed began speaking to the individual, who was upset that he could not find a job and provide for his family. Officer Reed then moved out to him until the men were approximately five feet apart. The individual was standing on a ledge with both hands gripped around the cables and turned his body while wrapping his other arm around the cables. Detectives Loughery and Fazio, believing the man was preparing to jump, quickly moved in and secured him with a safety harness and a rescue line. He was then brought to the safety of the roadbed and removed by EMS to Staten Island University North Hospital.

Jewish Man Returns $98K Found In Secondhand Desk
Imagine buying a desk under $200 on Craigslist only to find thousands of dollars hidden inside.
That’s exactly what happened New Haven Rabbi Noach Muroff and his wife. They found a huge pile of cash after buying a desk. When the couple brought the desk home it wouldn’t fit through the door. The couple had to pull the desk apart, including the file cabinets. Behind the drawers they discovered a plastic bag filled with cash. they counted up and there’s $98,000 cash sitting in the bag. The couple couldn’t believe their eyes. They picked up the phone and called the original owner
The original owner was speechless. “Oh my gosh, because I… oh my God,” she said. The former owner had stuffed her inheritance in the desk and forgot where she put the money. The rabbi and his wife returned the cash to the rightful owner. Rabbi Muroff said the most important thing in life is to be honest.

Can a 2,000-pound Satellite Crash in Your Backyard?
A 2,000-pound satellite may crash in your backyard Sunday night.
Who do you sue if you’re hit by a satellite?
A defunct satellite from the European Space Agency the size of a Chevy Suburban is set to plunge to Earth somewhere between Sunday night and Monday afternoon -- and experts say there's no way to precisely determine where it will crash.
OCE, or Gravity field and steady-state Ocean Circulation Explorer, ran out of gas last month and has been steadily sinking towards the Earth. As the planet rotates, the satellite whizzes over nearly every point on Earth. Experts expect it to plunge harmlessly into the oceans that cover 70 percent of the surface of the planet. But what if it doesn’t? What if it takes out your old Accord? Click Here for more.

Preserving Iraqi Jewish Heritage
Jews have lived in Iraq for thousands of years, but when coalition forces entered Baghdad in May 2003 only very few remained. A U.S. Army team searching for weapons of mass destruction in the flooded basement of the Mukhabarat, the headquarters of Saddam Hussein’s intelligence services, discovered over 2,700 Jewish books and tens of thousands of documents. The remarkable survival of this written record of Iraqi Jewish life provides an unexpected opportunity to better understand this community. The US National Archives is preserving these books and documents and making them accessible worldwide.
