Cops, Bystanders Flip Car to Rescue Man from Crash

Police in Corpus Christi TX released dash-cam footage of a 70-year-old man being rescued after a fiery wrong-way crash on New Year's Day.

The crash happened early Jan. 1 on State Highway 358, according to police. The vehicle flipped on its side after the crash.

Video released Friday shows a group of officers and civilians flip the burning vehicle to rescue the man. The video stops before he is removed from the vehicle, but officials said he survived.

"The efforts from the officers and civilians are commended for saving the life of the 70-year-old male, who is believed would not have survived without their heroic efforts," police said in a statement.

The 70-year-old man was not identified. Four other people were injured in the crash and taken to a hospital, according to The Corpus Christi Caller Times.

Richard Lopez, the 28-year-old driver of the wrong-way vehicle, died at the scene, the newspaper reported.

Alcohol was likely a factor in the crash, KRIS-TV reported.
