Coast Guard Rescues Man From Capsized Boat

A group of responders working together to rescue a man trapped inside the cabin of a capsized boat Wednesday in Brookings was caught on film by a bystander.

According to a Coast Guard press release, a witness called the Coast Guard at 11:06 a.m. after seeing a 26-foot Army Corps of Engineers boat capsize near the Chetco River entrance on the Oregon Coast. A Coast Guard boat arrived at the vessel at 11:14 a.m. and reported one of the two people on the boat was able to swim to shore and another was unaccounted for.

At the time of the incident, waves were two to four feet high with four foot breaks.

As the Coast Guard boat arrived on scene in the water, a beach rescue began. Coast Guard responders in dry suits attempted to walk a 50 foot line to the overturned boat. However, once it was attached and rescuers began pulling that line with a winch, it broke.

A second, thicker line was attached and rescuers were able to use a tractor to pull the boat 30 feet closer to shore, where they were finally able to free the Army Corps of Engineers employee stuck in the cabin.

The Most Powerful Man in Lakewood

Lakewood's Bais Medrash Govoha Celebrates 75 years

VIN News - Lakewood, NJ - In a two part series highlighting Beth Medrash Govoha’s role in the explosion of Jewish growth that has transformed Lakewood in recent years, the Asbury Park Press profiles yeshiva president Rabbi Aaron Kotler and his multi-pronged efforts on behalf of the school and the Jewish community, both in and out of the township.

Bearing the name of his grandfather who founded Beth Medrash Govoha, Rabbi Kotler joined the school’s administration in 1996, reluctantly stepping in to help breathe life into the 53 year old yeshiva which was struggling financially.

After putting the yeshiva back in the black, Rabbi Kotler used those same reservoirs of business sense, charisma and sheer determination to grow Beth Medrash Govoha, a move that brought massive change to the township’s infrastructure in order to accommodate Lakewood’s ever-increasing population.

Dubbed “Lakewood’s other mayor” by the Asbury Park Press, Rabbi Kotler’s fingerprints can be seen throughout the town, focusing his efforts on the needs of the yeshiva community including Pell grants, transportation funding and educational policy.  In addition to lobbying legislators in Trenton on behalf of the township’s Jewish community, Rabbi Kotler also travels to Washington D.C. to advocate for residents’ needs, a move has yielded benefits to Orthodox Jews beyond Lakewood.

Praising the Asbury Park Press for its coverage, Rabbi Kotler stressed the value of giving the general population an opportunity to better understand “the immense and profound beauty of our traditional way of life, flaws and all.”

“Reporters have a difficult job in trying to get a story right, especially with tight timelines and fast news cycles,” Rabbi Kotler told VIN News. “The APP often shines a tough spotlight on local challenges; I am appreciative that they work equally hard on giving our community the ability to speak up.”

Severe Weather Strikes Israel

Jerusalem - 17-year-old boy drowned Wednesday after being swept away in a river in the Negev region in a flash flood, according to the Police Spokesperson’s Office.

Police are also searching for a girl that was reported missing in another flash flood. Police units dealt with a number of rescues in the south Wednesday during a severe, unseasonable storm that struck Israel, bringing rain and hail to much of the country.

Streets in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem flooded, as did areas of the desert and other cities across the Jewish state.

Dozens of people were treated for hypothermia after being caught in floods and severe rain.

A mall in Rishon Lezion flooded after the ceiling collapsed. MDA said no one was injured.

The Israel Meteorological Service said the rain was expected to continue overnight and into Thursday throughout Israel and would be accompanied by isolated thunderstorms.

It also said there was concern of further flooding in southern Israel and the Jordan Valley.

Reward Offered for info in Crown Heights Beating

A $50,000 reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest of a man seen attacking a Jewish man on video in Crown Heights, officials say.

Menachem Moskowitz says he is continuing to recover from his injuries after he was attacked Saturday while walking home from synagogue on Rutland Road and Schenectady Avenue.

Moskowitz says he said hello to a man before the man began yelling at him that he hated Jews.
In the video, the suspect is seen chasing him down and attacking Moskowitz.  The man allegedly called him a fake Jew and told him "they stole his money."

Moskowitz says he tried to walk away, but the man threw him up against a fence, punched him and choked him while threatening to kill him.

The attack left him with a black eye, severe bruising and a broken rib. He says he doesn't understand what set off the assailant.nNewly released surveillance video shows the man police say attacked him.

The suspect is described as being around 40 years old, around 6'5'' tall and weighing around 200 pounds. He appears to have a beard and was last seen wearing dark-colored clothing. Just last week, police say another Orthodox Jewish man was attacked near 770 Eastern Parkway.
However, investigators say it's not clear if the two cases are connected.

The company’s operational manager, Chaim Grunwald, spoke to us about the upcoming event and the buzz of activity which a day at World Wide involves.

World Wide Plumbing carries an extensive line of domestic cast iron products and builder grade fixtures, with a specialty shipping service and expedited time frames. Residents Work With Police To Catch Car Vandal

Police in Williamsburg made a quick arrest Sunday April 22 2018 in the case of vandalized cars and stolen license plates.

As CBS2’s Dave Carlin reported, a tip led officers right to a suspect.

Resident Joel Gee’s home security video captured images of a man in a blue hat appearing to take license plates off cars on Penn Street in Williamsburg on Sunday morning April 22 2018. Gee made sure to show it to everyone he could think of, including his local Shomrim, the Jewish Civilian Patrol.“It’s on the camera. You see everything,” Gee said. “Some people just like to terrorize someone else.”

Flaming Dish Set Off Restaurant Sprinklers

A work party got more than they ordered when staff at a Cava Mezze in Baltimore brought out a 'special surprise' for them at the end of their meal.

As staff emerged from the kitchen carrying plates of the Greek cheese dish saganaki, customers' cries of delight turned to howls of despair.

Staff had set the plates on fire, for dramatic effect, which blasted the heat detector above and set off the sprinklers - firing gallons of water onto employees and customers.

Diners run for cover and away from the reach of the sprinklers which continue to spray the room.

The hilarious event occurred on April 17 at a branch of the Cava Mezze chain in Baltimore, Maryland.

A saganaki is a Greek dish cooked in a two-handled frying pan which is made of cheeses including halloumi and feta.

For dramatic effect, the frying pans are set alight, often sending a gust of flame towards the ceiling.

Yossi Lebowitz "Horachamon" feat. Zemiros Group

About a year ago, Jewish music fans were introduced to a unique and new sound in Jewish music. Newcomer Yossi Lebowitz released his debut single Keil N’komos, a high energy pure rock song unlike anything Jewish music has heard to date, and fans loved it. He followed it up with the release of his debut album titled K’chochvei Hashomayim. Not only were all the songs on the album composed by Yossi himself, but it also featured collabs with the best in the business including; Freilach Band, Blue Melody, Yisroel Lamm, Zemiros Group, and even famed producer Eli Gerstner. The album had every musical style out there, and was a real treat to music fans across the globe.

Now, special for Sefira, Yossi has been working on a new composition. This new song titled “Horachamon,” is a Hartzig Nigun whose lyrics talks about the rebuilding of the Beis Hamikdash. It is said every night after counting Sefira. Yossi actually composed the song during sefira a few years ago, while davening at the Kosel one Friday night. Yossi wanted to keep the song’s authenticity, since the song is being heard for the first time in Acapella. That is when he approached singer, arranger and choir master Yoily Polatseck of the Zemiros Group to help produce and arrange the track. Yoily agreed, and kept the songs arrangement as simplistic as possible, to allow for the beauty of the song to shine through on its own. The harmonious voices of Zemiros group coupled with Lebowitz’s simple yet Hartzig vocals are sure to have you singing this Nigun as we’re yearning for the Bayis Hashlishi.

May we be Zoche to the coming of Moshiach B’karov…

Police Make Mailbox Vandal Fix Broken Box

A young mailbox vandal turned himself in to Rockland County authorities after he was caught on a surveillance camera.

Police say they decided not to charge or cite the teen, and had him clean up his mess instead.

The vandal apparently tossed letters from a Chestnut Ridge mailbox he ripped off its post. The homeowner's surveillance video caught it all on camera early Saturday, resulting in the teen turning himself in.

“He was scared. He said he saw on the other news outlets his picture,” says Arya Rabinovits.

Ramapo police had the 16-year-old from Pearl River fix Rabinovits’ broken box on Gottlieb Drive.

The Jewish homeowner added that the boy gave him no motive for his crime. The mailbox wasn't the only one that was damaged Saturday. Rabinovits says two more on the street were ripped off their posts. But he doesn't think the vandalism was an act of anti-Semitism. He says the two other homeowners are not Jewish.

Germany's Capital Sees Rise in Anti-Jewish Attacks

Police in Berlin are investigating an assault on two young men in which the attacker was heard shouting anti-Jewish abuse. One of the victims was wearing a Jewish skullcap at the time of the attack.

It is reported the alleged attacker has turned himself in to the authorities.

Al Jazeera's Dominic Cane reports from Berlin on how this incident is part of a trend of increasing anti-Jewish activity in the German capital.
