Wild Scene: Dozens of Men Chase Car in Williamsburg

Police say that no arrests have been made yet in a bizarre incident that sent a 9 year old Williamsburg boy to the hospital yesterday after being struck by a car speeding down a local sidewalk.

The incident took place at the southwest corner of Rodney Street and Lee Avenue at 4:10 PM .  A black Toyota Camry that had left the roadway and was driving on the sidewalk reportedly circled the block more than once before striking the child.  The victim, who complained of substantial pain to his right foot, was taken to Mount Sinai Beth Israel Hospital with what appeared to be minor injuries.

Police tracked the vehicle by its license plate and said that it is believed to be a rental.  Police confirmed that no one is in custody at this time and said that their investigation is ongoing. The incident was one of four complaints filed yesterday in the 90th precinct involving persons leaving the scene of an accident.

According to WABC reports, the car took the sidewalk after shopkeepers called the police to report that its two occupants were attempting to pass obviously counterfeit $20 bills at local stores. Witnesses said that once police were called, the men fled to their car but were unable to escape the area because of rush hour traffic that left them stuck on Lee Avenue.

Trapped by several individuals who tried to prevent the car from leaving, the driver backed onto the sidewalk and took off, forcing terrified pedestrians in the busy shopping area to jump out of the way, while shopkeepers pounded on the car and pelted it with garbage cans.

At one point, after finding himself cornered, the driver reversed direction, hurtling backwards down the sidewalk.

“It’s a miracle that only one person got hurt,” said onlooker Joseph Langsam.

China Wants to Battle Traffic Jams with This Futuristic Bus

The Hyperloop may help humanity travel great distances at remarkable speeds, but how should we sustainably get from point A to B in congested cities? An innovative public transport design, revisited over the weekend at the 19th international High-Tech Expo in Beijing, might provide a solution.

The electric “straddling bus” is designed for capacity and efficiency, not necessarily for speed. It’s built extra wide to carry up to 1,400 passengers, and extra tall to allow any cars under seven feet to travel underneath, whether the bus is in motion or not. This is important because, as a public transport vehicle, the bus would stop and start frequently to load and unload passengers. And, with a top speed of 40 miles per hour, restless drivers would undoubtedly want to pass through.

The bus may also help cities become more environmentally friendly. Its size would allow it to replace 40 conventional buses and, since it’s powered by electricity, the design would reduce fuel consumption by some 800 tons and carbon emissions by nearly 2,500 tons every year, chief engineer, Song Youzhou, told China’s official news agency, Xinhua.

Song’s design isn’t new, however, and neither is the concept. Back in 2010, Song gained media attention when Beijing proposed plans to develop an infrastructure to accommodate his bus by year’s end. No tracks were ever laid so many assumed the project would remain an idea.

Treehugger reports that the idea of straddling buses was first proposed by two American architects, Lester Walker and Craig Hodgetts, in 1969. The concept was ambitious, even by todays standards, including computer-driven vehicles, perpetual motion, and “friction-free air cushion bearings” as wheels. Walker and Hodgetts suggested the design be used to modernize New York City.

To those still skeptical about the straddling bus, Song told Xinhua that a full-scale model of is currently being built in Changzhou, China and will be tested by August. If all goes well, the design may help curb the carbon emissions created by approximately 20 million new drivers who take to the road in China every year.

Shirei Pinchas: A Lifetime of Composing

You are invited to get to know R' Pinchas Wolf. Pinchas is a composer of Yiddishishe Niggunim, and is set to release his first album collection of his composed songs. This video is the first part of a six part interview we will release leading up to the album's completion.

The soon to be released all-star album featuring some of the brightest luminaries in the Jewish music business may well turn out to be one of the most intriguing stories to hit the Jewish world in a very long time.

Shirei Pinchas features 11 original compositions by Pinchas Wolf of Detroit. While his songs have been featured both by Yehuda Green and Yonasan Schwartz on their most recent albums, Shirei Pinchas is the first time that Wolf, who is turning 70 this fall, has made his music available to the public.

Wolf, who was born in a DP camp, spent most of his formative years in Montreal. A student first at the Klausenberger cheder and then at the Lubavitch cheder, Wolf began composing music at just ten years old. He credits that lifelong passion for Chasidishe niggunim with his return to religious observance after a brief crisis that left him struggling on a personal level. In more recent years, having been told by a surgeon that he was humming a tune while undergoing surgery and sedated with general anesthesia, Wolf decided it was time to share his music with the public.

“It was a turning point for me,” said Wolf. “It made me realize that Hashem wanted me back and he wanted my nigunim to get out there.”

The Detroit Chazan said that he continues the practice he began as a Bochur of composing a new Nigun each week in honor of Shabbos.

Joining Wolf in his musical odyssey and giving voice to his compositions are several prominent Jewish music stars including Benny Friedman, Dovid Gabay, Shimmy Engel, Yoely Greenfield, Shlomo Simcha and Mordechai Shapiro as well as a soon to be named child star soloist.

Shirei Pinchas with music produced by Naftali Schnitzler is due out in time for Shavuos.

Nature Show Presenter Runs for His Life

A Brazilian television presenter was forced to run for his life while doing a show about tidal bores - after the wave nearly drowned him.

Richard Rasmussen, 36, has been called Brazil's version of Bear Grylls, and has been presenting nature shows on local television for many years.

However, in this instant, nature got a little bit too close for comfort.

Rasmussen, a popular nature show host in his native country, was filmed doing a segment explaining tidal bores. A tidal bore is a wave that travels up a river from the sea, and as Rasmussen explains this event he almost gets caught in one.

Rasmussen can be seen talking to the camera about the phenomenon, and as he turns around to show how amazing a tidal bore can be, it dawns on him that it is about to come down on him.

He is forced to flee the mass of water, running away with the wave hot at his heels.
