Lev Tahor Forced Out Of Guatemalan Village

A community of 230 Orthodox Jews from several countries, reportedly belonging to the Lev Tahor sect, began leaving the Guatemalan Indian village where they have lived for six years on Thursday after claims and counterclaims of discrimination and threats.

Their exit from San Juan La Laguna, on the banks of Lake Atitlan and 125 miles from the capital Guatemala City, follows a meeting Wednesday in which Jewish and indigenous representatives failed to reach an agreement.

Since October, the local indigenous population has accused the Orthodox Jews of discriminating against them and of violating Mayan customs. The Council of Indigenous Elders said the Jewish community "wanted to impose their religion" and was undermining the Catholic faith that is predominant in the village.

The decision to expel the Jews was made by 75 members of the Council, who represent the 20 indigenous communities of San Juan La Laguna. The Lev Tahor community is now looking for a new home after the deadline for their departure was set for Friday.

"The Ice Bucket Challenge!" Part 1

The viral fundraising campaign, the crazy " Ice Bucket Challenge " which has taken the world by storm and created tremendous awareness of this terrible illness, is responsible for raising more than $94 million in just over one month.

the ALS Association - which raises money for research and patient services, promotes awareness about and advocates in state and federal government on issues related to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig's disease -  reported that it received $94.3 million in donations  between July 29 and August 27 compared to $2.7 million during the same time frame last year.

Many in the Frum community participated in challenge, supporting this great cause. A significant number of Chabad Shluchim participated as well, showing love and support to their fellow Shliach, the beloved Rabbi Yitzi Hurwitz of Chabad of  Temecula, CA, who is suffering from the disease. May he have a Refuah Shleima speedily.

‘Ice Bucket Challenge’ Expedites Cambridge Institute’s ALS Drug Trial

Dr. Steve Perrin, the CEO and chief scientific officer of ALS Therary Development Institute in Cambridge, said ALS TDI was able to move the timeline up by two years because of the $3 million it raised through the Ice Bucket Challenge.

Located in Cambridge, ALS TDI is a non-profit organization founded in 1999 that includes 54 employees and 36 full-time scientists. ALS TDI started in the basement of a Newton family whose son had been diagnosed with ALS, and grew into the largest research institute for the disease. Perrin said he can’t talk specifically about the drug that he anticipates will be given to ALS patients by early next year, but added that he hopes to reveal more information in the upcoming weeks.

Iron Dome Shooting Down 15 Rockets Simultaneously

Incredible footage has emerged showing Israel's Iron Dome air defense system simultaneously shooting down 15 rockets fired by Palestinian militants.

The video clip, was filmed in an unknown location close to the Israeli border with Gaza.

It is believed that the militants who fired the rockets were attempting to beat the Iron Dome by launching multiple missiles in one short burst in the hope that at least one may make it through.

Iron Dome has been regularly called into use during the recent seven-week-long Israeli-Palestinian conflict, intercepting roughly 90 per cent of the hundreds of rockets fired by Gaza-based militants - the vast majority of them aimed at densely populated areas of southern Israel.

The video clip begins with a scene of panic as Israeli citizens run for shelter while the terrifying sound of air raid sirens rings out in the air. Several seconds later the familiar sight of multiple Qassam rockets emerge on the skyline - fired from inside Gaza by Palestinian militants affiliated with the Islamic organization Hamas.

As the rockets enter air space directly above the amateur filmmaker - who appears to have used a mobile phone to shoot the footage - the explosive sound of reactive Iron Dome interceptor missiles being launched can be heard.

Within seconds all 15 of the potentially deadly Qassam rockets are seen breaking up in mid-air as they are struck by missiles fired by the high-tech Israeli air defence system.

Mumbai Chabad House Reopens Its Doors

Surrounded by guests from around the world and more than 25 Chabad-Lubavitch emissaries from Asia who are in India for a regional conference, Chabad of Mumbai’s headquarters—also known as Nariman House—opened its doors once again today.

In November of 2008, Islamic terrorists entered the Chabad House run by Rabbi Gabi and Rivky Holtzberg in Mumbai, India, and murdered them and four of their guests in cold blood. In the immediate aftermath of the gruesome attack, photos of the smiling couple were transposed with images of their crying 2-year-old son, Moishe, and the bullet-riddled shell of the Jewish center the Holtzbergs had built in the heart of India’s largest city.

Today's official reopening also serves as the starting point for the next phase of reconstruction: a $2.5 million museum to be built in the apartment where the Holtzbergs lived and on the floor where most of the murders occurred.

Family Pleads To Search For Bochur Missing In Israel

Public officials Parents and the brothers of 23-year-old Aaron Sofer, an Orthodox Jewish man who went missing Friday from a woods in Jerusalem, pleaded with the Israeli government Tuesday to pour all its resources into finding him and returning him to safety.

At the news conference U.S. Rep. Christopher Smith (R., Ocean), the mayor of Lakewood, a New York assemblyman, and a New Jersey Assemblyman from the area made similar pleas. Most of the speakers voiced concern that Sofer, who was studying Torah at a Jerusalem yeshiva, might have been abducted by members of the radical Palestinian group Hamas or other enemies of the Israeli state.

Sofer, who wears glasses and has a closely cropped red beard, had gone walking Friday with a friend in a woods in Jerusalem. As they climbed down a steep embankment they became separated, and the friend was unable to locate Sofer after hours of searching, according to Israeli news accounts. About 6 p.m. he notified police, who launched a massive manhunt that included helicopters, search dogs, and hundreds of volunteers.

The steps of Lakewood town hall were crowded with men of all ages dressed in black trousers, white shirts, yarmulkes and the black fedoras often worn by haredi, or ultra orthodox Jews, who make up a substantial part of this Ocean County township's population. Many in the crowd said afterward that they did not personally know Aaron Sofer, but came to the news conference in a show of support.  Sofer's parents flew to Israel on Sunday to join in the search.

Pilot's Eye View Of Death Defying Airplane Stunts

A video showing a pilot's eye view of death defying airplane stunts has emerged from the Cameron air show in Missouri, US this year.

In the clip we see the pilot performing white knuckle moves as he nosedives back to earth at speed and even flies through flames.  Loop-the-loops and spiraling back down to ground level were just two of the stomach-churning tricks the pilots pulled at the event.

And the action culminated in a plane flying so low that a motorcyclist could grab a wing to propel him along a runway at breakneck speed.

Lakewood Yeshiva Bochur Missing In Israel

New Jersey politicians on Monday called for more help from both the U.S. and Israeli governments for a student who went missing during a hike in Jerusalem last week.

Yeshiva student Aaron Sofer’s neighbors also gathered Monday night, praying for his safe return.

Sofer, 23, of Lakewood, has been missing since Friday when he went on a hike with a friend on a rocky, wooded slope in the Jerusalem Forest. Sofer and his friend apparently became separated, and Sofer never emerged. This area is bordered by Jewish communities and by Arab communities

U.S. Rep. Chris Smith (R-N.J.) and other local officials in New Jersey were planning a news conference for Tuesday in Lakewood to seek help in finding Sofer.

Holocaust Survivors Share Firsthand Memories

Brooklyn is home to the largest number of Holocaust survivors in New York, but many of them fear their stories are being lost.

Since nearly all survivors are now in their 80s and 90s, they realize that despite how difficult it may be, they need to share their firsthand accounts now to ensure their painful memories are never forgotten.

Dolly Rabinovich was among those at a Hanukkah party in Borough Park this past December where survivors gathered to remember the past with others who know what they've been through. She says her near-death experience at the Auschwitz concentration camp as a teenager continues to haunts her.

Michael Szenberg is still hoping to write an autobiography, but says it's going to be up to younger generations to keep their history alive.

Just this past May, the former chief rabbi of Israel, Rabbi Yisrael Lau, a Holocaust survivor himself, traveled from Jerusalem to Borough Park, warning that if survivors don't educate today's youth, then he fears history could repeat itself.
