Walmart is Open, Why Not Us?
America cannot wait one minute longer to help its small businesses drowning during the coronavirus shutdowns, "Reopen New York" petition founder Simcha Minkowitz stated Friday.
In an interview with "Fox & Friends" host Ainsley Earhardt, Minkowitz – who owns Amor Fine Jewelry in Brooklyn – explained that she helped found the coalition because of two friends whose lives were "shattered" after they were forced to permanently shutter their businesses crumbling under the strain of the economic crisis.
"I'm just one person that knows two people. So every single one of us knows someone that's hurting and we are all connected," she remarked. "And if the small businesses of America suffer, we all suffer. It's just that I cannot stand by and watch."
Minkowitz, who just opened her store 20 months ago, had taken out "tremendous" loans to do so. She felt she had to speak up for those who found themselves in a similar position.
Her initiative, "Reopen New York," created a petition to urge Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo to "get back to business." The group rallied in front of the Statue of Liberty on Wednesday. Their petition now has almost 8,000 signatures and the tally is steadily climbing.
"We are all connected. And, the small businesses of America are the backbone of our country..." she pointed out.
"We chose to do the press conference right by the Statue of Liberty because that's why people came here. They took tremendous risk to come to this country. My parents are immigrants. They worked really hard to give us a beautiful life," Minkowitz added.
"And, it's really maddening to see Walmart’s earnings soaring 10 percent literally in this past month. And, they can sell whatever. All [of] their nonessential aisles are open. So, why not give us a chance?"

How 1 Yeshiva Does Remote Schooling: An Example for All
When the Coronavirus hit New York - almost without warning - Jewish day schools, Yeshivos and Mesivtos had to scramble to find a solution for schooling kids from home while keeping them engaged - without free access to the internet.
Yeshiva Ohavei Torah in Riverdale is known for not only its top-notch learning in both Torah and secular studies, but its warm atmosphere and individualized attention. It's a place where no boy falls through the cracks. How could Ohavei maintain its unique atmosphere and commitment to excellence remotely?
In mid-March, when the Yeshiva sent the boys home from its dorms, Rabbi Chaim Pechter, the Menahel of Ohavei, instituted teleconferencing classes, and the full schedule of phone meetings went right up until Pesach- literally.
"We know the value and the potential of downtime," says Rabbi Pechter. "We are not just a school where boys learn and go home. We are responsible for filling their days with Torah and mitzvos."
While the teleconferencing lasted till Pesach break, some of the rebbeim felt a loss of the kesher they normally have with the talmidim. "One of the most hard-fought and hard-won values in our yeshiva is the trust of the boys," says Rabbi Pechter, "and the relationship between the talmidim and the rebbeim. Our rebbeim are so in-tune with them, and I was getting reports that they felt that some of the boys were not fully engaged. That's why I'm so thankful to Hakadosh Boruch Hu for Rabbi Tesser, our executive director."
Rabbi Yaakov Tesser did some intense research and found the perfect device through which to engage the boys without putting them in danger: a restricted Amazon Fire with a Kosher Zoom application. This device, available through KZoom, ensures that the boys will use only the Amazon device, hiding the ID of each meeting room to ensure using just the kosher screen.
"We handed them out to families right after Pesach, and the response from the boys and the parents has been tremendous," says Rabbi Tesser.

Excerpt: Interview with Mr. Nahum Gordon
A verdict by the Honorable Harriet L. Thompson confirmed exclusive rights to control and manage the synagogue at 770 Eastern Parkway in Brooklyn, New York, to its rightful owners.
In her decision, Judge Thompson cited the testimony of attorney Nahum Gordon. In this excerpt of a 2012 interview, Mr. Gordon speaks of his interactions with the Rebbe in drafting his will and in the revitalization of Lubavitch's three central organizations.
The interview which was released by Merkos L'Inyonei Chinuch was conducted by JEM's My Encounter with the Rebbe project, and is copyright by Jewish Educational Media. We are thankful to Mr. Gordon's family for their permission to share this interview.

Grandchildren Surprise Grandparents During Quarantine
From the author:
"It's been two months since we've been able to see them in person as we couldn't travel as a family so decided to surprise them now we are able to. I think the video speaks for itself actually! It was such an amazing moment! I loved it and it really rejuvenated me, they were very surprised and emotional to be able to see them! It's definitely something I'll cherish forever!
We decided not to tell them we were going and to show up. We parked round the corner and the kids loved sneaking up on the house! My mum and Dad usually see them at least once a week and they stay over a lot too so they have missed them very much. Especially the baby who is only 9 months old."

Achat Uletamid - Ishay Ribo 1 Minute Cover
The Maccabeats sing Achat Uletamid, originally performed by Ishay Ribo.
Like much of the Israeli public, we fell in love with Ishay Ribo's soulful lyrics and moving performances the first time we heard them. This is our first time covering his innovative music, and it certainly won't be our last.
One more thing: in order to share as much of our music as we can, we've started a new series of one-minute performances, or "Maccabeats Minutes."

Dad Reflexes in Full Gear
"I was watching my daughter in the playroom and she was testing me by climbing the table...as soon as she did, I had a feeling she would fall so I rushed over and scooped her up as she fell. I happened to just show my son a video of a dad saving a baby from falling so that’s what he’s referencing in background." April 29, 2020.

‘Why Are Our Politicians Favoring The Chain Stores?’
It’s been almost eight weeks since Gov. Andrew Cuomo ordered non-essential businesses to close, and there’s a dire prediction that many will never reopen.
CBS2’s Tony Aiello checked in with one Brooklyn businesswoman whose plea for help has gone viral on social media.
It’s a tale of two business models. Big box stores are open and drawing crowds, while small family-owned businesses have been deemed non-essential and mandated to stay closed.
“I cannot be trusted to open my door to one client at a time? Why are our politicians favoring the chain stores?” jewelry store owner Simcha Minkowitz says in a video that’s been viewed more than 270,000 times on social media by others since originally being posted on Facebook and Instagram.
Minkowitz and her husband dutifully closed their Borough Park store right before the busy Passover season.
“It was devastating, and we did it with love. We closed our doors with love because we knew we had to,” Minkowitz said.
As the lockdown has dragged on, Minkowitz has come to believe she can safely reopen, sanitizing every surface and allowing only one or two customers inside at a time.
“I think I’d be able to sanitize my space better than a large Target, let’s say, or a large Costco,” she said.
With six kids, she has every incentive to be careful, and she believes it’s time to let people assess their own tolerance for risk and shop accordingly.
