Protesters denounced alleged police violence during a similar gathering on Saturday night, brandishing banners reading "Charedi [ultra-Orthodox] Lives Matter," in a reference to the Black Lives Matter movement and the wave of protests and riots that engulfed the US after an African American man died in late May at the hands of Minneapolis police.
A few demonstrators shouted "Nazis" at police officers tasked with enforcing the lockdown on the neighborhood.
Last week the government announced that these neighborhoods, as well as several communities elsewhere in Israel, would be shuttered for seven days starting Friday.
An ultra-Orthodox Israeli lawmaker on Friday called on the country's two religious parties, Shas and United Torah Judaism, to temporarily withdraw from the government to protest against what he decried as "selective targeting."
