The History Behind Hungary’s Great Synagogue

Budapest’s Dohány Street Synagogue is the largest synagogue in Europe, easily accommodating 3,000 worshipers. Beyond being a monumental architectural gem known for its distinctive Moorish Revival design, the place of worship also offers a lesson in survival. Built in the 1850s, the Dohány Street Synagogue endured Nazi occupation and heavy damage inflicted by bombings during World War II. Today, it’s a place of beauty and solace, where hope and resilience are felt.
