Fire Tears Through Borough Park Aparment Building

14 people were hurt in an early morning three-alarm fire Monday at an apartment building in Brooklyn.

The fire started in the kitchen of an apartment at the four-story building on 49th Street at 12th Avenue in Borough Park around 4:20 a.m.

Firefighters on the roof of the building could hear a woman screaming, but she could not get out of her window because it has permanent gates on it, CBS2’s Magdalena Doris reported.

Crews were then sent inside where they were able to get the woman out. She reportedly has more serious injuries.

Nine others escaped the blaze from the fire escape and went towards the roof and also had to be rescued.

“I saw Hatzolah taking them out. They all looked to be OK, but they went in with a whole family, I believe it was six kids,” witness Ari Weiss. “They claimed that they were on the roof, they went up instead of down.”

Those nine people were all taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation.

The blaze has since been brought under control.

The fire department says there will be smoke and traffic delays in the area and have advised people nearby to close their windows.
