Video footage released by the NYPD shows a Chasidic man trying to fight off his attacker at a Greenwich Village subway station early Friday morning.
The victim, who was dressed in Chasidic attire, was slashed repeatedly by an unidentified man and robbed on the southbound platform of the Number 6 line at the Bleecker Street station early Friday morning April 8 2016.
The victim has been identified as 55 year old Avraham Fekete who was visiting New York from Israel.
The surveillance video, with a 3:10 AM timestamp, shows Fekete trying to escape his attacker, holding his hat in his hand as he tried to push through the metal turnstile. The attacker, a black man with dreadlocks, was dressed in a yellow jacket or vest with white printed sleeves and wearing a brown hood.
According to the Daily News, Fekete had gone to visit friends in the Diamond District on Thursday when he got lost on the subway and ended up on the southbound platform of the Bleecker Street station. Fekete asleep on a bench at approximately 3 AM and was woken up by a man who demanded his money and slashed him several times on the hands, face and neck.
The incident left the station closed during Friday morning’s rush hour as the NYPD continued their investigation. Police have yet to determine if the attack is being classified as a bias crime.
