Ancient Mikvah Discovered in Jerusalem

During the construction of a kindergarten at the initiative of the Jerusalem municipality in the southeastern Arnona neighborhood, an ancient mikveh (ritual bath) from the Second Temple period nearly 2,000 years ago was found - and with it extraordinary inscriptions bearing a cryptic message from the past.

The Mmikvah was found around two months ago during a routine inspection by the Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA), according to an IAA statement on Wednesday.

An anteroom, flanked by benches, led to the Jewish ritual bath, and alongside it a winepress was also excavated.

But the most unusual aspect of the mikveh was its walls, which were treated with ancient plaster and bore numerous wall paintings and inscriptions, written in mud, soot and incising.

As was customary at the end of the Second Temple period when the Romans occupied the Jewish state of Israel, the writing was in Aramaic and written in cursive Hebrew script. The symbols drawn on the wall include a boat, palm trees and various plant species, and what looks to be a Menorah.

Rav Leivik Schneerson Vs. the USSR: Unbroken Spirit

Reb Gedaliah Mazal witnessed the arrival of the Lubavitcher Rebbe's father, Rabbi Levi Yitzchak Schneerson, in Khazakhstan. He had been exiled there by the Soviets for the crime of spreading Judaism, but defiantly continued to speak out against the evil regime.

Reb Mazal describes the impact his bearing had on all who saw him, his continued activism, and the scene of his passing on the 20th of Av.

Rabbi Levi Yitzchak Schneerson was considered one of the greatest Talmudic and Kabbalistic scholars of his generation. He served as the chief rabbi of the city of Dnipropetrovsk, Ukraine, during the bloody Bolshevik revolution and the subsequent Communist oppression. Despite terrible persecution directed at religious leaders in those days, he remained fearlessly defiant in strengthening Jewish learning and practice in his city and throughout the Soviet Union. Rabbi Levi Yitzchak was eventually arrested, tortured, and subsequently banished to exile in a remote village in Kazakhstan. His spirit, however, was not extinguished, even while his body was broken and eventually gave way to his early passing.

Police Pulls Man Seconds Before It's Hit by Train

A San Mateo County Sheriff's deputy saved a driver's life Monday night after he pulled the man out of a car just before an oncoming Caltrain hit it,

In a harrowing video capturing the incident, passers-by can see the sheriff's deputy pull the man out of the car and next to the tracks. But within seconds, a northbound Caltrain's horn can be heard as it barreled down the track, heading straight for the car. The sheriff's deputy can be seen grabbing the driver, who has not been identified, by the wrist and quickly dragging him away from the car.

Then, the train smashes into the car, sending it spinning on the tracks. No one was hurt,

164 Skydivers Smash Head Down World Record

Travelling at speeds of up to 240 mph, 164 skydivers flying head-down have built the largest ever vertical skydiving formation.

The formation, resembling a giant flower, floated above Skydive Chicago in Ottawa, Illinois, for a matter of seconds Friday before the flyers broke away, deployed their parachutes, and whooped and hollered their way to the ground.

Seven aircraft flew in precise formation to ensure the jumpers de-planed at the right place, time and altitude. The record jumpers exited at 19,700 feet.

Ottawa is 80 miles southwest of Chicago.
