Rebbe's Secretary Interviewed Before Yahrtzeit

Rabbi Yehuda Krinsky, who served as the Lubavitcher Rebbe's secretary and is the Chairman of Merkos L'inyonei Chinuch - the educational arm of Chabad-Lubavitch, didn't get much rest on Tuesday.

Taking a break from his responsibilities at 770 Eastern Parkway, Rabbi Krinsky went across the street to the Jewish Children's Museum in Crown Heights to participate in the bris of his twin great-grandchildren.

Not long after the joyous ceremony, Rabbi Krinsky left Brooklyn for Long Island where he was a special guest of an evening in honor of the Lubavitcher Rebbe's  21st Yahrtzeit, upcoming this Shabbos, at Chabad of the Five Towns in Cedarhurst.

Rare Inscription Bearing Biblical Name Found in Israel

Israel’s antiquities authority says archaeologists have discovered a rare 3,000-year-old inscription of a name mentioned in the Bible.

The name “Eshbaal Ben Beda” appears on a large ceramic jar. Eshbaal of the Bible was a son of King Saul. Archaeologists Yosef Garfinkel and Saar Ganor say the jar belonged to a different Eshbaal, likely the owner of an agricultural estate. Although it has no connection with the biblical character, the inscription shows that Eshba’al was a common name during the early Israelite period.

They said Tuesday it is the first time the name was discovered in an ancient inscription. It is one of only four inscriptions discovered from the biblical 10th century B.C. Kingdom of Judah, when King David is said to have reigned. Archaeologists pieced together the inscription from pottery shards found at a 2012 excavation in the Valley of Elah in central Israel.

In the video below, PM Bibi Netanyahu gets a  first hand look at the ancient barrel.

Yiddish Soul Concert at Central Park's Summer Stage

VIN News - NY, NY - Approximately 3000 people gathered yesterday at Central Park’s SummerStage for a free concert that celebrated the many genres of Jewish music.

Yiddish Soul: A Concert of Cantorial and Chassidic Music was part of Kulturfest NYC, an eight day festival that cast the spotlight on Jewish arts. Presented by The National Yiddish Theater Folksbiene in honor of its centennial, Kulturfest is currently featuring films, documentaries, classical and cutting edge Jewish music, comedy, symposia, workshops, children’s programming and other exhibits and events at venues throughout New York City.

Last night’s concert featured Jewish music’s elite, with musical styles that ran the gamut. Taking the stage throughout the night were Avraham Fried, Netanel Hershtik, Yanky Lemmer, Joseph Malovany, Lipa Schmeltzer and Zusha, a neo-Chasidic band that has been top ten ranked by Billboard, a well known music publication serving the entertainment business.

The orchestra led  by musical director Avremi Gourarie, AKA Avremi G. On the grand piano, the artistic director of the National Yiddish Theatre Folksbiene, and the man who first thought of this concert - Zalmen Mlotek. On keyboard  the star of Manhattan Transfer, Yaron Gershofsky.  On drums,  Benny Koonyevsky. On bass, Mike Hall, On guitar Nadav Remez.  Trombone - Dan Blachserg, Clarinet/Saxophone - Michael Winograd,  and on trumpet, a Grammy winning artist whom you will see and hear throughout Kulturfest - a giant of the Klezmer revival - Frank London.

Turnout for Yiddish Soul, an effort by the NYTF to reach out to the Orthodox Jewish community, was higher than expected, despite threatening skies and rain, which ended just before the concert began.
“We almost got rained out twice but it was a fabulous concert, with everyone from all walks of life, whether Jewish or not, coming together with the message of the impact of Jewish and Yiddish culture throughout the world,” Christopher Massimine, chief operating officer of the NYTF and executive producer of Yiddish Soul,  told VIN News.  “The most amazing thing we saw was how many people came and appreciated the message of peace, sincerity and contribution.”

While the notion of Yiddish music and chazanus might seem to appeal only to the older set, concert goers of all ages were swept up by the music during the program, which ran over two and a half hours and was hosted by radio personality Nachum Segal.  Even the attire of the performers, from Malovany’s white dinner jacket to Schmeltzer’s white derby and colorful bow tie, seemed to echo the message of the night:  that Jewish music is alive and well with something to appeal to everyone.

Having five of Jewish music’s top performers taking the stage in the midst of the most visited urban park in the city and one of the most filmed locations in the world seemed surreal for some.

“Chazzanut in a park? Impossible,” said Chazan Yanky Lemmer. “Yiddish to young teenagers from across a wide spectrum of backgrounds? Impossible. Well that’s exactly what happened and from the reactions we know it was effective. Towards the end, the crowd was on fire! The blend of the two and the way the program kept escalating was superb.”

Remembering the Victims - Reviving the Unity

Thousands of people participated on Tuesday evening in an event called “Shiru Achim” (lit. "sing brothers") held at the Ra'anana Amphitheater in memory of Naftali Frenkel, Gilad Sha’ar and Eyal Yifrah, the three teenage boys who were abducted and murdered by terrorists a year ago.

Speaking at the event were former IDF Chief of staff Benny Gantz, the American Ambassador to Israel Dan Shapiro, Rabbi Benny Lau and Ra'anana Mayor Zeev Bielski.

“I think that the State of Israel and society must find ways to strengthen its unity,” Gantz told Arutz Sheva. “We must find ways to stay together and I’m sure we will.”

Gantz added that he saw the unity among the people of Israel during those 18 days in which the search for the three boys continued. “We must find a way, other than in times of tragedy, to strengthen this unity,” he added.

Ambassador Shapiro told Arutz Sheva that the message he conveyed in the rally was that “the hearts of all Americans are also with the three families of Gilad, Eyal and Naftali and the Israeli people...that solidarity will remain.”

Exploding Plants

Most of us are used to seeing the ‘helicopter’ style seeds of a maple tree or the seeds of a dandelion flutter in the wind. But there are many more plants in the plant world with even more unbelievable ways of spreading their seeds.

The Smithsonian Channel just shared this brief new clip of three plant species that use different methods of propulsion to spread their seeds. The filmmakers captured slow motion footage of violets, touch me nots, and poisonous squirting cucumbers as they explode in some pretty incredible ways.

Knesset Unity as Torah Dedicated for Jewish WW2 Vets

Jerusalem - In the presence of MKs, rabbis and veterans of the Soviet Union’s Red Army, a new Sefer Torah was completed in the Knesset on Tuesday June 11 2015, and dedicated to the Knesset’s synagogue as part of efforts to commemorate Jews who fought in various armies and partisan units during the Second World War.

The initiative to commemorate May 9, the date on which Russia marks victory over the Third Reich, in the Jewish calendar as a day of honor for Jewish fighters in the war, came from Gabriel German Zaharyaev, a Vice President of the Russian Jewish Congress who also donated the funds for the Torah itself.

After speeches from former chief rabbi and Holocaust survivor Yisrael Meir Lau and president of the Conference of European Rabbis Pinchas Goldschmidt, the final letters of the Torah were inked by Edelstein, Minister for Jerusalem Affairs Ze’ev Elkin, head of the opposition MK Isaac Herzog, MK Avigdor Liberman and several other MKs.

Following the completion of the Torah, it was danced down the Knesset’s hallways accompanied by raucous music along with rabbis, dignitaries and members of the audience from the event and entered into the Knesset synagogue with great fanfare.

Little Girl Gets Her Hat Off For The Queen

Right place, wrong time! An adorable 6-year-old named Maisie greeted Queen Elizabeth II with a perfect little curtsy on Thursday, June 11, at the Colours Parade for the Royal Welsh Regiment in Cardiff, Wales — but was smacked by a soldier after her big moment. The slap, of course, was accidental. As the soldier snapped his hand to salute the queen, his hand caught the little girl’s face.

Spain Welcomes Back Sephardic Jews After 500 Years

The Spanish parliament formally approved on Thursday June 11 2015. a law aiming to correct a “tragic and historic” error by offering citizenship to Jews whose ancestors were expelled from the country in 1492. Yes, 523 years later, it seems, Madrid wants to do the right thing.

The Spanish Inquisition beginning in 1478 under Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand brought about widespread expulsions, executions and forced conversions of thousands of Jews as a method of asserting the dominance of Catholics.

The Alhambra Decree in 1492 said that Jewish people faced death without trial if they did not leave Spain or convert to Christianity.

In 1924, a law gave the government discretionary powers to award Sephardic Jews nationality, but candidates had to give up their previous citizenship and they had to be residents of Spain.

The legislation, which passed with a wide majority and with support from all the largest parties, is a rare gesture out of Europe, where anti-Semitism and other ethnic tensions have been on the rise in recent years.  It was first proposed as the Sephardic Ancestry Bill in 2012, igniting self reflection and dragging up painful memories among the global community of Sephardic Jews.

Woman Outsmarts Robbers with Quick Thinking

Argentinian robbers on a motorcycle try to steal woman possessions. The attempted robbery took place in Buenos Aires. The woman saw the robbers approaching and realized that the destination she was heading to has a very high gate. So, she proceeds to throw all of her belongings over the gate which would mean that the robber could either climb the gate and get the valuables or run away.

In this situation many would not think to act in the manner that she did. Most might panic and end up begging and pleading or just giving up all of their valuables. Not this woman.

Boeing's 787 Dreamliner Does A Near-Vertical Takeoff

The Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner is no tiny flower. The plane holds 280 passengers, has a nearly 200-foot (about 60-meter) wingspan and is over 200 feet in length. It's smaller than a 747, but you still might expect it to be a lumbering creature, raising itself into the air in a gentle arc.

The 787-9 is turning out to be the acrobat of the Boeing family. Boeing released a promotional video Thursday that shows off the plane's chops. The most stunning stunt is a near-vertical takeoff featuring the jet cruising along the runway and then climbing into the sky at a startling angle. It's the sort of thing that would have passengers clinging to their seat arms.

The Vietnam Airlines-branded plane is in rehearsals for the Paris Air Show, which takes place from June 15-21. The major trade show features a series of flight displays that allow manufacturers to put their latest airplanes through their paces to entice buyers.

The Boeing video goes on to feature some sharp aerial moves with tight turns and sweeping speed, making it seem like the Dreamliner's daddy might have been a fighter jet. The takeoff remains the star of the show. Chances are pilots won't need to pull off such a dramatic maneuver in regular service, but it's fun to know the jet is capable of pushing passengers' guts into their spines if it wants to.

Paris Air Show 2015 Dream Display: A Boeing test pilot’s perspective - Boeing Test Pilot Chad Lundy steps us through the breathtaking Vietnam Airlines 787-9 flying display at the Paris Air Show today, explaining how the crew positions the airplane to best show off its maneuverability and grace and highlighting the operational and environmental benefits of the innovation built into every Dreamliner.

Israel Steps Up Fight Against Growing Boycott Movement

A movement to boycott Israel for its activities in the West Bank and Gaza is growing in popularity, and Israel's government is vowing to fight back.

The boycott movement, called BDS, which stands for Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions, opposes what it says is an Israeli system of discrimination against Palestinians. BDS has activists working in many countries, and the movement has tens of thousands of followers on social media.

Co-founder Omar Barghouti said BDS is growing quickly at least in part because of the formation of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's right-wing government.

To counter the growing influence of the movement, Jewish-American billionaires and political mega-donors Sheldon Adelson and Haim Saban bridged their political differences -- Adelson is a Republican, Saban a Democrat -- and pledged to start and fund an anti-boycott movement.

"This isn't over. This is just the beginning," Saban told Channel 2 Israel about the Orange CEO and the boycott movement. "Any company that chooses to boycott business in Israel is going to look at this case, and once we're done, they're going to think twice whether they want to take on Israel or not. Trust me, this is just the beginning."

Netanyahu also promised to go on the offensive against the movement.

"We will gather forces in Israel and around the world to shatter the lies of our enemies, and we will fight for Israel's right to live in peace and security, to live at all," Netanyahu said.

Critics of the movement have accused Barghouti and his followers of racism and anti-Semitism. Barghouti denies the allegations.

"We are targeting a system of injustice. This should never be conflated with an attack on any group of people based on their identity," Barghouti said. "BDS targets institutions, complicit institutions, not individuals."

CNN Reports:

BDS is nothing but Jew hatred. They target the only democracy in the Middle East while ignoring countries committing genocide! Don't believe it? Watch this video!
