Huge Waves Created by Calving Glacier

Surprise Glacier in Prince William Sound in Alaska gave tourists an incredible show over the weekend when it began calving, but the resulting tsunami-like wave created some anxiety on the boat.

Once the tourists saw that first wave, they became uneasy, one saying, “uh-oh!” The captain recognized the anxiety of his passengers and assured them everything would be OK.

“Don’t worry, we’re a lot farther away than it looks,” you can hear him say on the loudspeaker. “By the time that wave gets in it will be a nice, easy, swell ride.”

The tourists responded with nervous laughter.

But the captain was right, when the wave reached the boat, Huensch said, “it was just a gentle ride up and down.”
