Relentless Storm Pummeling 6 Feet of Snow In Western NY

A ferocious storm dumped massive piles of snow on parts of upstate New York, trapping residents in their homes and stranding motorists on roadways, as temperatures in all 50 states fell to freezing or below.

Even hardened Buffalo residents were caught off-guard Tuesday as more than 6 feet fell in parts of the city. Authorities said snow totals by Wednesday afternoon could top 8 feet in the hardest-hit areas south of Buffalo, with another storm expected on its heels.  The cold weather enveloping the entire country Tuesday led to record-low temperatures more familiar to January than November. Racing winds and icy roads caused accidents, school closings and delays in municipal operations from the Midwest to the South, even where snowfall was low or mercifully absent.

Almost 76 inches of snow fell in the suburbs in southern Buffalo, according to The National Weather Service. This total was a record over a 24-hour period for anywhere in the U.S. on record. It prompted New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo to declare a state of emergency in 10 counties.

An impressive band of lake-effect snow off Lake Erie hammered parts of western New York Monday into Tuesday, leaving only some parts of the Buffalo metro area with several feet of snow.
