Boy Rescued After Getting Caught In Metal Roll-Up Gate

A boy was taken to the hospital after he got stuck on a rolling metal gate in Williamsburg Thursday evening, authorities say.

The boy may have been playing on or near the gate on Skillman Avenue in Williamsburg when it suddenly activated, taking him to the top of the drum as it rolled up, according to FDNY Deputy Chief Vinny Mandala. A witness said the boy was hanging from where he was trapped at the top of the gate.

The boy was stuck for about 15 minutes before firefighters were able to free him. They used hearse tools and airbags to retrieve the child, according to Mandala. The boy looked fine when he was brought down, the witness said. The boy was transported by Hatzolah to Bellevue Hospital with minor injuries to his leg and arm, and was listed in serious but stable condition.
