Seven members of the ultra-Orthodox Jewish group Lev Tahor were arrested yesterday over immigration issues.
The Canadian Press writes that Stephen Doig, executive director of
Chatham-Kent Children’s Services, stated they worked with the CBSA and
that the seven members arrested have a combined 28 children.
Doig said that children whose parents are both in custody are now in
the care of the children’s services. It is not known how long the
children will be in their care.
Eight Lev Tahor children were detained last month after leaving
Canada with their families before a scheduled hearing. Six were stopped
at Trinidad and Tobago trying to head to Guatemala and two others were
found in Calgary. Six more children – also part of the custody battle – remain in Guatemala.
