Some 10,000 people watched as a 116-metre-high (380-foot) former university building was demolished in Frankfurt on Sunday. The "AfE Turm" ("AfE Tower") was the tallest to have ever been blown up in Europe.
Some 950 kg of explosives were used in the 10-second demolition of the high-rise which was built in 1972. Demolition master Edward Reisch triggered the detonation via radio from the nearby Senckenberg Museum. The first bang detonated the pillars of the building's skeleton and 3.5 seconds later a second explosion collapsed the core of the building.
The cost of the operation is estimated to have been a seven-figure sum, and clean-up of the 50,000 tonnes of steel and concrete is expected to last more than five months.
