Rayatz of Lubavitch Arrival to America 1940

The Previous Rebbe of Lubavitch, Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak, also known as the Rayatz, arrives in America after his miraculous rescue from Nazi-occupied Poland.

After many years of fighting to keep Yiddishkeit alive from within the Soviet Union-which included imprisonment, torture and a death sentence - he was forced to leave. He then continued to conduct the struggle from Latvia, and then Poland. On 9 Adar 5700/1940 he arrived to the port of New York and continued his mission there, with the message "America Iz Nisht Andresht (America is no different)" bringing Judaism to the United States. The Rebbe spent the next ten years in Crown Heights, until his passing in 1950.

9 Adar I 5700 - February 18, 1940.
