Israel's Channel Two’s "School of Music" or "“Beit Sefer L’Musica" junior talent show competition reached its final stage last Motzei Shabbos, with 13-year-old Michel Cohen from Dimona crowned as the winner of the first season’s event.
Below is a video of Mishel singing Jo Amar's "Barcelona" with the Pirchei Yerushalyim boys choir.
“Beit Sefer L’Musica” is a reality television show that has taken Israel by (musical) storm. Children with extraordinary musical abilities compete in a format similar to “American Idol” (or, in Israel, “Kohav Nolad (A Star is Born),” which is broadcasted by the same channel). Channel Two’s School of Music junior talent show competition reached its final stage on Saturday night, with 13-year-old Michel Cohen from Dimona crowned as the winner of the first season’s event. Cohen’s operatic rendition of the emotive “Al Tashlicheini Le’et Zikna” (Do not cast me off in old age) was judged to be the best of the kiddies’ bunch and the youngster performed the song a second time, after his win was announced, with veteran crooner Yehoram Gaon, who was his teacher.
Cohen, who cites mathematics as his favorite subject at school, beat a 16-strong nation-wide field which included crowd favorite, Phillipines-born Kathleen Eligado, 11, Ofir Elbaz, 8, from Sderot, Dan’el Rubinstein, 8, from Ashdod, Shalev Menashe, 11, from Hofit and Shai Hamber, 13, from Netanya.
The contestants were taught by four famous singers: Gaon, Mati Caspi, Moshe Peretz and Keren Peles.
‘We’re very proud of Kathleen even though she didn’t place first. It’s more than enough for us,’ her sister, Hazel, told the Post.
Israeli superstar Eyal Golan sing with the boy.
Below are 3 videos of Mishel singing at a Simcha when he was 12 years old.
