Aweful Tragedy in Itamar - A Family of Five Massacred

Shomron - The Israeli military says a Palestinian has infiltrated a Jewish West Bank settlement and killed five people. Israeli media is reporting that the dead are all members of the same family — parents and three children.

The knife attack, which killed two young children, a baby and their parents as they slept, was the deadliest in years. It comes at a delicate moment, with pressure building on Israel to launch a new peace initiative and the Palestinians pushing for world recognition of an independent state — with or without a peace deal. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemns the brutal terror attack. Netanyahu condemned the international community for not acting quick in condemning this act of violence and the PA for engaging in double talk, talking peace to the world but inciting hate and violence in their schools, mosques and media.

Tsunami 101

Find out how a tsunami is born and how it destroys.

Massive Earthquake Tsunami strikes Japan

Hundreds are dead after the worst earthquake in generations struck off the northeast coast of Japan on Friday March 11 2011, setting off a devastating tsunami that swallowed swaths of coastal territory and fanned out across the Pacific Ocean, threatening everything in its path. the 8.9-magnitude earthquake—the world’s fifth-largest since 1900 and the biggest in Japan in 140 years—struck at 2:46 p.m. local time, shaking buildings violently in Tokyo for several minutes and sending millions fleeing for higher ground. Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan in a press conference called for people to remain calm and reported that the nation’s nuclear power plants showed no signs of damage.

New from Living Torah -The Making of Music Notes

Living Torah, the popular weekly Chabad video magazine watched around the world, is about to get a new segment.

'Music Notes,' - a collage of newly-recorded Chassidisher Nigunim accompanied by still photographs from Jewish Educational Media's vast photo archive will be a once-monthly segment. The name derives from the clip's unique format: The photos are accompanied by 'notes' - information on the Nigun, photos, or background of the scene.

The new segment was underwritten by Uri and Bassie Laber of Miami Florida. "Uri wanted to make modern recordings of Chassidic Nigunnim, while keeping closely to their original tune, without ornamentation or deviation from their true roots," says Rabbi Elkanah Shmotkin, JEM's Director. Bentzi Marcus, an accomplished musician, vocalist and producer, was brought in to produce the music. While making the modern recordings, the producer was tasked with verifying the veracity of every note. "It got to the point where we were seeking out older Chassidim and Chassidic musicologists to verify that our emphasis on a certain note was accurate. Then Uri would challenge me further - to verify that a certain kvetch was not added, but was part of the original Nigun," said Marcus.

In envisioning the recording project, the producers recognized that they had something very special on their hands, and wanted to find a proper showcase for the work. "Uri has been a key supporter of our archival preservation efforts, and we realized that the natural fit would be to put the Nigunnim to photos from our archive." Although each Living Torah DVD features 12-15 new photographs from the JEM archive over the credits, they had been seeking a platform to display more of them. He turned to JEM's senior researcher Rabbi Akiva Nussbaum, and video editors Yanky Ascher and Yossi Margolin. Together they came up with a theme for the first segment, entitled 'Prayer,' featuring memorable scenes of the Rebbe in prayer at 770.

Laber then took it a step further, suggesting that they add the free association notes to the scene.

The end result, says Shmotkin, is inspiring. "Our Living Torah audience will now get to enjoy a unique combination of three elements: beautiful recordings, stunning photos, and great information.

Frum School Wins a Championship in Incredible Comeback

North Hollywood Valley Torah rallied in the fourth quarter to defeat Bishop Diego, 58-51, to win the Southern Section Division 6AA championship on Motzei Shabbos, March 5, at Mater Dei High School in Santa Ana, CA.

First-quarter scores of 17-5 are usually in Valley Torah’s favor. Not so against Bishop Diego of Santa Barbara, which seemed poised to end the No. 1-seeded Wolfpack’s winning season. But, as the adage goes, “It’s not how you start, it’s how you finish.”

The Wolfpack finished strong, becoming the first Orthodox Jewish school to win a California Interscholastic Federation championship after coming back from a 44-35 fourth-quarter deficit to take the Southern Section Division 6AA championship title, 58-51. “It’s an incredible feeling to be the first Jewish team to win a CIF championship,” star center Aaron Liberman said, “and now other Jewish schools realize it’s possible to accomplish what we did.”

Liberman tied the game at 46 on a three-point play (which can be seen in the video below at the 1:23 mark) with just over three minutes to play, and Valley Torah finished the game on a 23-7 spree. Valley Torah fans broke into refrains of “mishenichnas Adar marbim b’simcha” as the game wound down.

The win sent Valley Torah to the Division 5 state championship tournament where they beat the Calvin Christian School of Escondido at Los Angeles Valley College on March 8, by the score of 58 - 50.

The next game for Valley Torah will be played Thursday, for the second-round game, against the 17-16 View Park Prep.

Grapes to Raisins in 30 Seconds

Everyone knows grapes when dried become raisins. But have you ever seen the entire processes with your very own own eyes?

Grapes become raisins right before your very eyes in only 30 seconds.

From the author:

"This video took over 3 months to shoot. I shot it with a Sony VX2100 mini dv video camera in "interval record" mode. The camera shot a half second of video every 10 minutes. In total, I had over 90 minutes of tape that I condensed to 30 seconds. This means that this video is over 250,000 times faster than reality (could someone please check my math).

I apologize about the shaking in the video. I used a new setup with boards under the camera and fruit that I thought would make it more stable. Unfortunately, changes in temperature and humidity caused the boards to warp up and down. It was unnoticeable in real time, but very noticeable when the tape was sped up so much. I used keyframes to reduce the shaking and even though it's not perfect I think I came up with something that is very watchable."

Ari Goldwag - Hareini Mochel

From the author: "Perhaps the two most important words in a relationship are the words, "I forgive." This is true in our relationships with others, with ourselves, and with God. When we are able to see the broader picture, to see our own humanity and the humanity of others, and when we recognize that God has a greater plan that we may not really see - then we can forgive."
