I guess it really works!
On a serious note, I don't think anyone understood the Posuk to mean a story like this.
I mean you would think that in this day and age they would know what Tefilin is. Not to mention a flight out of New York City!

Interesting to note that this happened in the Parsha that speaks about Teffilin!
its a mitzvah to daven in public
goyim seeing yidden with tefillin makes them aware of who is the Boss
