Yaakov From Uzbekistan - The story Behind the Song

Yesterday, the fourth of Adar, was the Yhartzeit of Yaakov Potash. Known famously as Yaakob from the popular heart wrenching Reb Yom Tov Ehrlich song which was subsequently recorded by Avraham Fried on his Yiddishe Gems.

I was told that when Yaakov escaped, the first house he found was none other then the house of Reb Yom Tov Ehrlich's parents. When he entered their home, Yaakov’s pants were torn from his journey to survival, so his mother (RYTE’s mother) sewed up his torn clothing while Yaakov waited in the other room.

Below is an article the Homodia newspaper ran six year ago. We apologize for not having the full article right now. We hope to Imy"h post the full writeup in a few day.

Yeshivat Merkaz Harav - A Year Since The Devastation

Two extremely powerful and emotional videos highlighting how the Yeshivat Yerushalayim L'Tzeirim (Yashlatz High School) dealt with the aftermath of the shocking and devastating terrorist attack at the campus they share with Yeshivat Mercaz HaRav*(see note below), on Rosh Chodesh Adar 5768. And the heroic leadership of their dynamic Rosh Yeshiva Rabbi Yerachmiel Weiss

Part 1.

Includes: A short synopses of the attack, Rav Weiss speaking to students two hours after the attack, as well as his speech to his students on the first day back at Yeshiva on Thursday.

Part 2.

Includes: The Rosh Yeshiva of Yashlatz, Rav Weiss, interviewed by Ilana Dayan on the Sunday after the Rosh Chodesh attack in which six of his students were killed. This interview was hailed worldwide as an immense Kiddush Hashem. This is the first time the English subtitled version has been available for the public.

*Yashlatz (a high school) and Mercaz HaRav are two separate institutions. Although the media commonly mix them up and incorrectly think Yashlatz is part of Mercaz. Rav Weiss is Rosh Yeshiva of Yashlatz and Rav Shapira is Rosh Yeshiva of Mercaz.

A Deadly Secret

Sunday, February 22, 2009.

A Jewish boy who fled into the forest after his family was killed by Nazis was later captured by Nazi soldiers who, not knowing he was Jewish, gave him a little uniform and a gun and made him their mascot. Bob Simon reports.

It's interesting to note that this is the same Bob Simon who reported just four weeks ago, one of the most biased reports i have ever seen from CBS News.

I Confess - A Bar Mitzvah on a Mitzvah Tank

From the uploader: "I Confess - A documentary about Chris Hahn, a film maker investigating Bar Mitzvahs".

I don't fully understand what's going on over here. To me it seems that first this guy was found to be Jewish and was invited to put on Tefilin etc., and only after that occurrence did he decide to make a story out of it. As you can clearly see the first scene of him standing by Ground-Zero, actually occurred after he met the Rabbi.

At any rate this is a real interesting video. The actual Mivtzas Tefilin is beautiful, the Rabbis talking in Yiddish in front of him is quite hilarious. And the Yechi Part is a bit disappointing to say the least. I don't know why he had to stick that in! But I'll try to overlook that, since that does not take away from the beauty and good work which is portrayed in this video.

Isaac Honig at the Bar Mitzvah of a Special Child

Isaac Honig in Williamsburg, singing at the Bar Mitzvah of of Rafael Schonfeld a special boy with down syndrome.

The tune is originally from a song called A Yiddele, off of Isaac Honig's Behar Hamoriah album. The lyrics were written by a brother-in-law of the Bar Mitzvah buchir, since only a family member of a down syndrome child - who understands what it means... - is capable of writing such a beautiful heartbreaking song on this topic.
