Police used turned water cannons on hundreds of ultra-Orthodox protesters who were blocking roads in Jerusalem on Tuesday.
Officers could be seen dragging the demonstrators physically out of the street as they attempted to block the path of the water cannon with their bodies.
The demonstrators, who were blocking traffic at the Sarei Yisrael-Jaffa junction in the west of the city, were rallying over the arrest of an ultra-Orthodox yeshiva student who refused to appear at a military recruitment post.
Mounted police were also deployed to clear the demonstrators from the area, while the commander of the Israeli army's ground forces, Major General Yoel Strick, was also surrounded by protesters while driving through the area in his car and had to be rescued by police, according to local media.
Military service in Israel is compulsory for all men and women who are 18 years old, with a long-running exemption for the ultra-Orthodox being scrapped in 2014, while Israel's high court has repeatedly thrown out other draft exemption laws.

Orthodox Jews Protest For 2nd Night in Borough Park
Hundreds of Orthodox Hasidic Jews and other Borough Park residents gathered and protested coronavirus restrictions along 13th Avenue in Brooklyn on Wednesday night.
At one point the crowd surrounded and chased away journalist Jacob Kornbluh. In addition, multiple journalists and reporters were chased away, including an ABC news crew who had to be escorted by police.
After a couple of hours, a line of dozens of NYPD vehicles arrived and were stopped by the crowd at the intersection of 47th Street and 13th Avenue.
Some police vehicles were able to get through and officers in riot gear arrived, those officers also eventually were walked away from the crowd.

Community activist who is running for City Council, Heshy Tischler, spoke against Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Mayor Bill de Blasio over the order that shuts down schools and businesses, and limits houses of worship to 10 people in certain COVID-19 cluster areas.
Later that night a larger group of people led by Heshy lit a fire in which they threw their masks in defiance. FDNY was later seen putting the fire out.

Another Day, Another Protest
Hundreds of ultra-Orthodox men protested the arrest of a girl who refused to appear at the induction center in order to receive an exemption from military service. Road 443 was blocked for a short time to traffic at the Mevo Junction. Hundreds of demonstrators broke the order in Jerusalem's Sabbath Square. Police arrested four suspects.

BOROUGH PARK, Brooklyn — Protestors from the group Bay Ridge for Social Justice rallied outside Council Member Kalman Yeger’s Borough Park office Thursday protesting his tweet from Wednesday that reads, in part, “Palestine does not exist.”
“Yeger's comments were hateful. They were outrageous. He was dehumanizing Palestinians, which is absolutely unacceptable of any leader - especially a New York City Councilmember,” said Alex Pellitteri, with Bay Ridge for Social Justice.
But the protestors were quickly outnumbered by counter protestors waving Israeli flags and chanting.
Things got loud and there were heated exchanges between both groups, but a strong NYPD presence kept things under control.
Criticism of Yeger’s tweet also came from city leaders including Mayor Bill de Blasio and City Council Speaker Corey Johnson.

Dozens Arrested as Protesters Shut Down Streets
More than two dozen haredi protesters were arrested in Jerusalem Thursday afternoon, after hundreds of demonstrators blocked roads in the capital to protest the recent arrest of a haredi draft dodger.
Police reported that some 500 demonstrators had converged on the intersection of Jaffa Road and Shaarei Yisrael Street near the Central Bus Station, not far from an IDF draft office.
Demonstrators gathered to protest the recent arrest of Meir Blau, a young haredi man who refused an order to appear at the IDF draft office.
According to Israel Police, 28 demonstrators have been arrested.
“Israel Police forces are working with determination against the rioters in order to keep the roads and light rail line open, and have thus far arrested 23 demonstrators,” said a police spokesperson, before the number of suspects arrested rose to 28.
Some demonstrators clashed with police, cursing the officers as “Nazis”. “Better to die than enlist,” said some. “Go to jail, not the army,” said other protesters.
The demonstration was organized by the Yerushalmi Faction, a radical haredi movement founded by the late Rabbi Shmuel Auerbach with the goal of winning blanket exemptions for the entire haredi population.
At present, haredi women are exempt from the draft, while men who learn full time in yeshivas are permitted to defer their service on an annual basis every year they remain enrolled in recognized institutions of religious higher learning.
The Yerushalmi Faction, however, has called on its supporters not to cooperate with government draft officials – even for the purposes of obtaining deferments. That policy has placed the Faction outside of the mainstream of the haredi community, and lead to numerous arrests of young men who refuse to register for deferments.

Sephardic Rabbis Protest Against Israeli Draft Law
Sephardic rabbis gather for anti-Draft Law prayer service on the grave of Rabbi Ovadia Yosef Monday July 2 2018
Rabbi Netanel Cohen, one of the organizers of the Sephardic protest rally against the Draft Law, explained this morning in an interview to Kol Brama radio why he initiated the rally.
He says the Draft Law would be especially detrimental to the Sephardic public. "50% of the Sephardi Torah world does not come from haredi families and therefore the Draft Law represents a great danger," he explained.
He described a pressure campaign exerted on the Sephardic rabbis not to take part in the rally. "There are humongous pressures from political parties on leading yeshiva heads not to participate in the rally," he said.

Young Women Attacked in Mea She'arim
Footage taken Tuesday evening showed dozens of charedi youths in Jerusalem chasing after two religious girls, residents of the Musrara neighborhood, pelting them with cardboard boxes, stones and firecrackers and swearing at them profusely.
The video was taken at the capital's ultra-Orthodox Mea She'arim neighborhood. The two young women happened to stumble into the middle of a protest arranged by hard-line Haredim of the Jerusalem Faction against the alleged IDF conscription of a baalat teshuva (newly religious) girl, according to eyewitnesses present on the scene.
The young charedim demonstrating at the site began catcalling and booing the two young women, exclaiming at them, "Shiksa," "Filth" and "Leave our region, sullied ones"— demanding they leave their neighborhood. The girls, for their part, snapped back at the protesters and a verbal back-and-forth broke out. The verbal spat, however, quickly became physical when dozens of Haredi youths began chasing the girls.
David Perlmutter, present at the scene, said the girls escaped towards the Shabbat Square, where a police force was stationed. "They were chased by dozens of youths, who intermittently encircled them and threw rocks and firecrackers at them," he said. "They were accosted," he further explained, "due to their indecent attire—relative to the area's norms—as well as due to the fact they happened to enter the vicinity of the protest."
A short time later, other eyewitnesses added, the girls returned to the site flanked by two more girls and a bike-riding boy, and tensions erupted anew. As the videos taken by Perlmutter and another man attest, bystanders attempted to physically hold off the attackers.

Extremist Jews Protest Sentencing of Draft-dodgers
Hundreds of charedi men belonging to the extremist Jerusalem Faction group have taken to the streets of Bnei Brak and Jerusalem once again to protest several relatively lengthy jail sentences by a military court against several yeshiva students who have illegally evaded IDF service.
The protestors blocked major roads and junctions in both cities, bringing traffic to a halt intermittently.
The Jaffa Military Court sentenced 11 yeshiva students who failed to undertake the necessary bureaucratic process required to obtain an IDF service exemption to sentences of up to 90 days in prison.

Charedim Continue To Protest Arrest Of Draft Dodgers
Jerusalem - Several hundred ultra-Orthodox Jews blocked the main entrance to Jerusalem on Monday and protested in other areas as part of a series of demonstrations against serving in the Israeli military.
The protesters occupied an area around Jerusalem’s main bus station that serves as the city’s primary exit and entrance point, At one point, police used a foul-smelling spray known as “skunk” to disperse them.
There were reports of roads being blocked in other areas as well. Police said at least 10 people had been arrested.
A series of such protests in recent weeks has been spurred by occasional arrests of ultra-Orthodox young men accused of dodging military service.
Last week Thursday, police arrested 120 demonstrators after a major intersection was blocked as part of a string of protests throughout the day. Police said protestors in the ultra-Orthodox Mea Shearim neighborhood had blocked streets and set fire to garbage bins, using them as flaming barricades.
Israeli law requires men to serve two years and eight months in the military on reaching the age of 18, while women must serve for two.
Ultra-Orthodox men are exempt from military service if they are engaged in religious study, but must still report to the army to receive their exemption. Those who are not exempt must enlist with the military and can be arrested if they refuse.
In September, a decision by Israel’s supreme court struck down the law exempting them.
However, the court suspended its ruling for one year to allow for preparations for a new arrangement, also giving the government time to pass a new law. The ruling raises the possibility that the ultra-Orthodox could be forced into service, a highly contentious proposition with political implications.
Ultra-Orthodox parties are a key part of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s governing coalition and have often acted as kingmakers in Israeli politics.

Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said about 2,000 people from a fringe group of ultra-Orthodox Jews protested in Jerusalem, where they blocked a central intersection and paralyzed the main entrance to the city for hours. Some protesters held signs reading “draft equals religious persecution” and others set trash bins on fire. Protests took place in other cities as well.
The demonstrators oppose the recent arrest of a number of young men from within their community after they refused to be drafted into Israel’s compulsory military service.
Rosenfeld said police would use “whatever means necessary” to break up the “illegal” demonstration.
Many from Israel’s ultra-Orthodox community believe young men shouldn’t have to enlist in the military, saying they serve the nation through study and prayer. That position along with government-issued draft exemptions for many ultra-Orthodox have caused friction with Israel’s secular Jews, most of whom must enlist at 18 and demand the ultra-Orthodox do their share.

Police say they arrived at a building on Chevra Shas Street in Meah Shearim armed with a court-signed search warrant. They were met with a group of people who protested their entry. It appears this office is a location where people go to receive help with obtaining draft deferments.
Police raided the office and confiscated computers and files. Before the raid was over, dozens of Chareidim ended up in violent confrontations with police. Stones, garbage and other items were thrown at police, who arrived in riot gear to try and disperse the crowd. 6 people were taken into custody. It is unknown if they were inside the office, or they were arrested because of the Hafganah.
The raid took place at precisely the same time that a soldier dressed as a Charedi was walking in Meah Shearim causing many people to yell and protest his presence. Additionally, there was a minor protest at an IDF induction center in the area, as a yeshiva Bochur was reportedly arrested. He has since been released. Residents claim that police orchestrated the two other incidents at the same time to minimize the number of people who would be able to protest the raid of the office of Chevra Shas Street.
